It was a block of metal from inside my old stereo that had copper inside, which i had removed. Also, some steel. Im not sure what the part was. Very heavy, 5 lbs probably.

I think there is a sign that says any steel brought to the small scale gets .01 lb.
My main objective was to see what steel is worth. I have no truck so I wont be scrapping a lot of it.

36 lbs of alum. cans @ .62lb - $22.32
130lb car transmission @.02lb - $2.60
11 lbs alum. w/iron (alum. ladder) @ .05lb - $ .55
2 lbs of dirty brass @ .50lb - $1.00
7 lbs of yellow brass @ 1.75lb - $12.25

Total - $38.72

The transmission was not worth the trouble. It was very heavy and i had to take the oil pan off and clean up a mess.
My scrap yard does not take transmissions with fluid still in them. :(

In your respective areas do you have to get fingerprinted to sell metal? Here you do. Privacy issue . However they are concerned about stolen property especially copper.

I can't believe you sold it for $.02 per pound. That's horrible. I would have found another yard immediately. Was it a cast aluminum shell?

Also, .05lbs for irony aluminum? Do you not have many options for scrap yards?

A friend of mine is a mechanic and said the transmission was no good. Yes it had a cast aluminum shell. I called all 4 scrap yards in town all the same price. The same for the alum. w/iron. I chose this scrap yard because they have better prices on everything else. I won't be picking up transmissions anymore, they are too much trouble.

That was very sad. My yard would have at least taken it in the steel pile and payed better.

Most scrap yards assume that you are desperate for cash and will screw you over every chance that they get. I have a yard by me that tried some of that and i now drive an hour and a half one way to my new yard. The prices and service more than make up for the drive. I am not the only one dissatisfied with my local yard as they are extremely slow right now. This is a very competitive business and you need to service your customers or someone else will. Call around and find a better yard or advertise your stuff on craigslist and guys like me will be more than happy to purchase your material. I have portable scales, come to my customers and even say thank you with a smile. I can't stand 90% of the yards that I have dealt with in the past.
