Cool way to house wheats

After recently finding my 10th wheatie in the wild this month, I was trying to think of a better fate for it than just tossing it into a plastic tube with all the others. So I looked thru my extra unused Whitman folders and found one of those blank/no date types for cents. I could've use that to create another 1941-58 Number Two-style collection, but thought no, I've got one already, and it leaves half the book empty.

Then an idea occurred to me. I counted the holes from the 90th all the way to the first and I'll be darned, a nice PDS date run from 1927-58 fits perfectly. Out came my rolls of extra wheats and suddenly I was a kid again. I was surprised how many holes got filled!

Missing from 1940-58 are: 40-D, 54 & 55-S

Found in the 1927-39 section: 27, 27-D, 27-S, 28, 28-S, 29, 30, 34, 35, 35-D, 36, 37, 37-D, 38, 39 & 39-S

Most importantly, it creates anticipation that each new wheatie I find could be a hole-filler.

I'll keep updating this thread as new ones are found.

It's a good thing the mintmarks are on the obverse! I would think the good folks at Whitman would have lobbied the U.S. Mint to try and have all mintmarks be on the observes. Even holders where you can see the obverse and reverse both don't suffice. It is better to be able to see both date and mintmark at the same time.

The mints finally figured it out, but it sure took a long time. I remember having to look to the right of Monticello on the reverse for the mintmark on nickels. Or above the dome of Monticello for the war years.

If I ran the mint back in the day, that would have been one of the first things I changed.

I liked the MMs on the reverse. To this day it adds a bit of drama.

Found my first wheatie (1940) in the wild today since I started this thread but alas, it wasn't a new date.

Anyone care to guess what year/MM will be the first hole filler?

Coinstar netted me two wheaties today - 1937 & 1941.

Alas, neither were hole fillers.

Getting closer, only one away from my 42 guess... lol

Took over two months but I finally got a new date ----> 1934 <---- thanks to Coinstar. Along for the ride was a 1955 but that wasn't a hole filler.

I've added a breakdown of missing dates by mintage in the OP. The 1934 was the third most common missing date, so it was a decent candidate to show up.

What's your choice for the next find? Will you go with the most probable by mintage, or buck the odds and choose something rarer? I'll put your name next to the guess.

After a drought of 41 days I finally filled a new hole! And it is...

Yep, the #2 highest mintage missing date ---> 1939. No winners in this round unfortunately.

So the hunt begins for the next hole-filler. Do those who've played want to keep their original guess, or change things up? I'll leave it the way it is until I hear otherwise.

After 56 days, another Coinstar wheatie surfaces...but it's 1937, a date we've already got. Still nice to find a pre-40.

Pretty good choice. Being in Vegas means S-mint coins are more common. I was able to complete a full roll of 1951-S nickels a few years back. In the 70s and early 80s I was lucky to find even one example when I lived on the east coast.

It's a good way to reconnect with that young collector we all were at one time.

He is almost 6 and is in kindergarten, he likes to find the wheats in my Cu piles....recently we have been searching nickels for his birth year. I will turn it into a numbers learning lesson and count our finds.

Happy to find my 2nd wheatie in one month but it wasn't new to the book.

50 days later the next wheatie turns up via Coinstar ---> 1956-D.

Just five days later and another wheatie surfaces courtesy of Coinstar.

The back looked really worn so I kept it in my pocket till I finished my errands. Once home I took out my Whitman album, ready to possibly fill a 20s or 30s hole.

It was a 20s alright, but it pre-dates the book! I was looking at a solid VG 1923.

Bummer that it's not a hole-filler but woo hoo that it's my new oldest CS find of the year.
