I just happen to have a box of '21 P cents, and I was debating on returning them to the bank when this die crack business caught my attention. Anyway, curiousity set in and I opened a few rolls tonight.

I didn't find any of those rim-to-rim fault lines but I did get a few each of these :

Slow going on the die crack searching - there's a lot to look for - but I've already found around 30 of the rim/lapel crack type and 9 spiked head. Out of only 6 rolls. Either I got lucky with this box or these are waaay common.

The spiked heads are bringing $2 to $5 on ebay. Certain other die cracks are all over the place. Curiously, the lapel version that I'm finding is not otherwise being reported, or at least I haven't seen it mentioned.

If these averages hold up through the entire box I may end with 6 uncirc. rolls of one and 2 rolls of the other.

I did order another box of cents for pickup next Wed., same branch.

I listed one on ebay just to see what the interest level is.

Now don't any of you knuckleheads bid it up...I appreciate the thought but that's not why I posted it here. 8-)

Neat stuff Morsecode. I definitely wouldn’t part ways with the variety you haven’t found elsewhere..

I am still not quite halfway through the 2021 box and already the bag has this many die crack coins. They all pretty much look exactly the same.

The spiked head coins are fewer, but almost at a full tube.

I haven't really looked hard at the reverses. I have seen a bunch with weakly stamped "OF" but I'm not sure that's even a thing worthy of separating out.

I put one of the cracked die pieces on ebay that drew little attention in the Lincoln Cent - Shield category. Have since relisted under US Coins - Errors...see if anyone there nibbles at it. Still have not seen another of same mentioned anywhere.

It begs the question of whether it is collectible if more coins were made badly than not. Maybe the true error is the coin that was made "correctly"! Lol

To your point, there was a time when finding a die crack was a big deal. Or a bigger deal anyway. A die will only last for so long before giving out. Are we left to assume that QC at the mint is looking the other way in, a) knowingly letting these coins go out, or b) not knowing or caring because of whatever reason...covid, demand, etc. 2021 was the height of the pandemic craze after all.

Yet I'm confused as to why I haven't read reports of this particular variety more than a year after being released. The spiked heads have been reported. And there is a major die crack variety having first been found in Virginia, where the crack extends rim to rim, from 7:00 o'clock to about 3:00 o'clock. Which means the entire Lincoln penny world is now out there looking for it.

Maybe I just got lucky with this leftover uncirc. bank box. :P Maybe it's a dud.

Seems that there is no end to this box. I still have 21 rolls to crack open, and so far have found:

60 spiked heads
240 die cracked, lapel to rim

Having moved an example of the die crack from "Shield Cents" to "US Errors" I've started to draw a little attention on ebay. Ends tonight...we'll see.

I just found one of these today in the same box...

Maybe you should hang back before you sell all these; if - a year from now after you let them all go for a few bucks - you find out that you had the primo motherload box of errors, and few others were found, you might regret letting them go for cheap?

Yeah, I will probably do just that. Hang onto them awhile. The one on ebay is just to test the waters. I even asked viewers to reply if they've seen this particular variety, and one guy said he recalls an auction (he thinks) but no details beyond that.

I'm probably going to hold off on opening 10 of the rolls anyway just in case this year or next is the last for the cent. Unless the error takes off in a big way, like $10 each or something like that. Then I might not be able to restrain my curiousity.

Not quite like winning the big lottery, but I hope it's a big hit. Sometimes even the good guys get a win.

The final numbers on that box of 2021P are:

336 lapel crack
85 spiked head
(none exhibit both)

This was out of 40 rolls. I'm holding onto 10 rolls unopened, just because.

I have so far seen the lapel die crack on a single ebay auction and nowhere else. Curiously, that seller is also (like myself) in Connecticut. I don't know if he has a single coin or many.

For the record, the Loomis bank box was stamped #7523. Not sure if that's at all meaningful, but I may as well mention it. For now, I guess I'll just sit on them. I am curious to see how these are reported in the future and from where the uncirculated concentrations are/were found.

So I finally got around to picking up another box of Lincolns from my branch today, and they handed me another uncirc box of 2021P...with the same batch #7523 :P :P :P

Got the first box in January. Will this one be filled with the same die crack?

I think it would be so much fun to search one of those boxes! All I see around here are the Denver mint ones.

You definitely should just stack it for now.

Look up Blue Ridge Silver Hound on YouTube. He does weekly market reports of errors sold on eBay. He also found about $15,000 worth of that error you pictured at the top of this post. I watched him sell a bunch of the on his eBay account.

kookoo×10 I think is his eBay account name off the top of my head. If that's not right, let me know if you're interested & I will check on it.

Congratulations on so many finds of the other errors. I will be interested to see if they become the next big deal....

Pam - Thanks for the post. I did look up that guy with the youtube channel, very interesting.

I've only opened a whopping 2 rolls from the new box with the same lot number and found nothing. No spiked heads, no die cracks. The first box had 10-12 errors in each roll.

One thing I have noticed is that these latest cents are spotted like crazy. Way worse than the first box.
