1947 dot 5¢

I recently purchased a small lot of .999 nickel and found two of the 47 dot variety in the batch. Then, yesterday, I wrangled a 2005 edition of "Coins of Canada" out of a local coin shop and was surprised to see the Dot valued so highly...$25/F12, $40/VF20, $90/EF40...

Can they really be so uncommon if I plucked two from a random group of less than $20 fv?

Not concerned with the actual real world pricing; I assume this guide is similar to our Redbook and primarily useful as a population report.

Do you Canadian nickel guys find them regularly?

Could one of them are both been a 47 Maple leaf, Also I do not know why but Whitman does not have a hole for the 47 dot 5 cent but the do for the 1936 Dot cent.a coin with five know. For price info on your 47 see https://www.jandm.com/script/getitem.asp?CID=3&PID=86 Joe

No, they're dots for sure. I found about a dozen of the leafs in the same batch. The dots are lower and much closer to the 7.

I was hoping to find a '43 or '44, then realized those are not nickel

Would like to buy a nice BU of either year since they have Morsecode on the reverse

I'm high bidder on a '44 right now, so not ready to trade until that plays out...but here's a pic (best I can do with the cellphone). I'd say both coins are equal in grade & eye appeal. VF? Better? Worse?...



The guide only gives grading points for "hair above the ear" on the obverse, and not too specific at that. Not sure what VF: 'Where hair not worn, hair is clear but not sharp' means. If the coin were US I'd call it XF or better.

We found one today in a batch of Canadian 1 and five cent coins we got from the coin shop at a .75 of face. And we get to fill a hole in our new album!

I've looked through many thousands of Canadian nickels (the .999 type) and I think in all those nickels I found one 47 dot.

Dang, it's like the 1965 Large Beads. I have searched a ton for those. Never any luck and it's a major squinter of a job too. Not the most fun error to look for.
