I sent some mutilated coins back to the mint.

Postby henrysmedford » Sat Nov 26, 2011 8:20 pm

Last year for fun I sent some mutilated coins back to the mint. I read how to do it on the web and then got a letter back from the with the "rules" . I found the letter today while I was cleaning and found a way to post some links so it could be read. :D Also first I got a post card.

They didn't take your coins?

They did not pay for them. They would send them back if I asked in the time frame. :D

Did they say why (or did I miss the explanation)?

We sent about $15 of bent coins we got for free from coin counters. It filled a small flat rate box. Because they were not separated by type they would not accepted it. You got to love the job title "Mutilated Section Clerk" :D

Zinc $100 FV = 55 # x $1.45 = $79.75
Copper $100 FV = 68.42# x 1.45 = $99.209

Look like the mint knows what zinc is worth.

Now I'm glad I've held on to my mutilated zincs, I almost have enough to send in. :) I also like how you can turn in your "uncurrent" silver coins for face value.

Years ago I made the same mistake and sent in a pile of halves. I got them from a guy who made magic coins...did not have enough weight so I ended up losing out too. I was totally frustrated. I could have gotten it back if I paid the postage I thnk but I just let it slid.....

I don't understand why they won't process underweight coins...they are just going to melt them anyway. why not just weigh them in with the rest? :?

I got the coins out of the trash bin in a Coinstar machine at a job I use to work. There were many bent coins. Several dollars worth. At break I would put a few on the hard counter in the break room and whack them with a hammer. I bought several drinks with those coins

Strong words from someone I don't even know. Everyone gets paid fast and problem free which is why we have institutional customers for this service.

I see the way you read that AGM, but I took RP43's comment more as he wants to have fun screwing with the government. Maybe if he had left off the "then you" part, it would have flown much better.

That's just how I see it anyway.

Agreed. I think henrysmedford post here is a self testament to just go through portland mint for this, avoid the hassle and be smart.
