No idea locally as I haven't sorted meaningful amounts in years, but in select regions the percents have dropped from low 20s to less than 10. In other areas there has been not so much sorting and so results not much affected. And some cases of previous hoarders giving in and cashing out, returning them into the wild.

I got a whopping $5 the other day, I could swear that I got some of the ugly copper I turned in on a ,member's recommendation.

Haven't sorted since last March due to the pandemic, but prior to March I was hand sorting $5.00 per week in CWR's. I was averaging about 18% copper and 1-2 wheats per week. I not sure that hoarding is having as much an impact on the percentages as is the dilution of existing copper cents by the billions of new Zincolns produced every year.

I'm not actively sorting like I used to, but whatever copper I find in my change goes into the hoard.

I'm seeing mostly zincs in my change these days, maybe 10% coppers. It's slowly disappearing.

I've been sorting off and on for almost 10 years. It was around 25-28 in 2011, 2012 etc, but now I estimate 18-20 percent. I did a box study ten days ago and will report numbers in the appropriate forum

I am getting 18-22 % but they are from bags I picked up as early as 2015 through 2018. I haven't picked up new supply since sometime in 2018 when my bank quit taking my call and now that branch is closed. I still have about $3,000 to sort through. Here is a stack of $2,500.

In response to pennyguy - you did well to get 24 percent. Must have been some good customer wrapped rolls in your sort. Loomis rolls are now only 16-20 percent.

I don't sort through rolls, but in random change that I find, it's still about 50%. I also find alot of the 1968 year for some reason.

Hi all!

I can echo most of the other posts- I get mostly Brinks' boxes in IL and Im pulling about $5-$5.50FV in copper per $25 box. It's definitely starting to dwindle out there! When I started sorting cents 10 years ago it was easily $8FV in copper per box. If cents survive the 2020's decade as a circulating currency, I can see us getting sub-$3FV copper boxes~

Still getting about 10-12 wheats per box, weirdly!

Sort until you can't!

Cheers, wags

Yeah, it's slowly dwindling down. But in a way we're lucky because the U.S. STILL has not eliminated the penny. Its now been 8 years since CAD banks surrendered all of their pennies. I sorted around 5-6 boxes of CAD in 2012. Wish I could still sort them now. But like the other member already said, "sort while u can"

I recently picked up a machine rolled bank box of pennies that only had about 2% copper. I am pretty sure it hasn't got that bad, so I assume I am getting someone elses dumped pennies. Anyone else currently sorting coppers in the Rochester, NY area?

Opened 20 CWRs today and got roughly 20 percent copper with two wheats. Will be opening Loomis rolls tomorrow because that's all I've got right now.

Sorry for the question, but how long have you guys been waiting to be able to melt/sell out these coins for more than face value? I keep throwing them in my copper bottle, but sometimes think I'm just looking like the dope on my street. :(

Three thoughts:

First, I tried for a box of nickels and was rebuffed by, "the coin shortage." So my backup plan is to ask for "two rolls of nickels and two rolls of pennies," which I did get. These were CWR, the cents produced only two copper cents, only one was worth keeping.

Second, the rising inflation and current value of copper cents makes me glad I have some. I'm ahead of the curve having tangibles.

My "street" has no clue that I have enough copper to re-forge Thor's hammer. I am just the compliant and nice "old man" next door.

My bank no longer allowing any coin pickup, they actually called me looking for coin, so I sorted two boxes that I was able to pickup in March of this year. Going to return the zincs to the bank tomorrow.
Results of box# 731 & 732 respectively, 14.08% cu w/ 1901 IH, 5 pre 1942 wheats, 8 post 1944 wheats 352 total cu; 1 1938 wheat, 3 post 1944 wheats, 1 AU ‘59, 2 CAD, 377 total cu, 15.08%. In the Houston area we are down 3-4% in the last decade even with the huge influx of the shields.

Sorted 6 boxes of pennies so far this week. Getting them from a few different branches of my credit union. Averaging 10-15% copper and 10-15 wheats per box (which isn't bad consider the low amount of copper per box). Thankfully, no skunk boxes this week.

Since I took it out of retirement, my Ryedale has been flawless. As long as I keep it cleaned and lubed, no problems at all. Gun oil (Balistol or Rem oil) is working much better than most other lubes I've used in the past. No jams in the chute either. I only use Dri-Slide on the S&P.
