One of Franklin's favorite banks had a branch burn down.

Postby henrysmedford » Tue Mar 13, 2012 8:19 pm

As you know my son Franklin has autism and will goggle banks and found one of Umpqua banks branches burn down today. We have been by this branch when we have been out of town. When Franklin saw the story he said a prayer for the bank outloud.

Umpqua Bank was evacuated at around 9:15 Monday morning after smoke began pouring out of the bank’s ATM room on the south side of the building. Firefighters initially tried to track down what was burning. They made numerous wall cuts, inside and out, but then the smoke began pouring out of all four corners of the bank. Firefighters continued to try to find the source, but when the flames shot through the roof at the center of the bank’s roof, firefighters withdrew. At that point the entire bank was engulfed in flames. All firefighters could do was put as much water on the conflagration as they could.
No word on a cause although the State Fire Marshal is enroute from the valley to aid in the investigation. The bank manager said the vault and the safety deposit boxes should have survived the blaze.

I hope your son is doing o.k. With it. My son has Aspergers and when his routine is changed he has a hard time. Hopefully no one was hurt and nothing was lost.

You don't see this very often.. Still, I love watching like ten firemen standing around watching her burn.

White shirt...

So the bank was melting coins? Thought that was illegal.

The black shirt looks like the culprit to me!

(and I'd have the same goofy look as Franklin with those two on either side of me...)

I would like to also know how the boxes came through in this bank. Please see if you can find that out... Might make me change my mind..

Amateurs. Around here, fires are a disability lottery for the firemen. I never hear about a fire in Massachusetts without hearing about firemen being transported to the hospital with injuries. And since I'm already off-topic, four houses near me went up in smoke (two burned to the ground) during a 40-50 mph wind a week ago. The wind made it like a blast furnace. (Three firemen hit the lottery on this one.)

I hope Franklin is handling it well.

Umpqua to open temporary Newport branch

Until a new office opens later this week, a mobile location is operating in the burned bank’s parking lot

NEWPORT — Umpqua Bank is moving its Newport branch to a temporary location after a fire destroyed most of its existing branch on Highway 101 Monday morning.

The bank is hoping to have the temporary location at 141 N.W. 11th Ave., Suite A, open later this week, spokeswoman Jane Taber said Tuesday.

In the meantime, Umpqua has set up a mobile location in the parking lot of the fire-damaged branch at 1250 North Coast Highway. The mobile location is staffed by Umpqua employees from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is able to accommodate limited customer transactions, Taber said, including deposits, withdrawals and check cashing of $500 or less.

“Umpqua Bank is also waiving all foreign ATM fees for our Newport customers in order to allow them convenient access to their funds,” she said.

Taber said the bank is continuing to work with local authorities to secure the location where the fire occurred and has begun an assessment of the extent of the damage.

“We will provide all customers with additional information, including updates on accessing safe deposit boxes, as soon as possible,” she said.

Until then, bank customers with questions can stop by the mobile location or call 866-486-7782, she said. When the Newport Fire Department responded to the fire at 9:17 a.m. Monday, it appeared to have been active for some time, officials said.

Firefighters were able to close the bank vault before they had to leave the building because high winds were fueling the attic fire, threatening the entire structure. Moments later, the roof collapsed, and the building was engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported.

The fact that firefighters were unable to secure the vault does not speak well for either the security of bank vault or the contents of the customers SDB's.

Has anyone ever heard of what the integrity of a SDB would be in the event of a fire. Everything I've ever heard related to the vault door being closed. When I stop at the bank next week I'll have to ask. However I would have to think that dual boxes should help if you box is away from the vault door.
Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you.

Neither a penny or a nickel is worth face value anymore.

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger.

It says "able" not "unable".

There is a difference in the levels of secured too. Don't go reading too much into it. During business hours, sometimes it's just the metal barred cage door that is locked, not the fire proof vault door.
