Anyone trustworthy want to try to verify a potential find

Postby misteroman » Mon Dec 13, 2010 3:27 pm

found a penny a few weeks ago but wanted someone to look at it. took it to the coin and he sort of verified it but wasn't sure what to make of it. Long story short I found a 1922 penny. is it a no D? can't really tell because it's probably a Pr-2 coin. Anyone want to take a crack at this one?

There were no cents minted in Philadelphia in 1922 so all of them should have a "D" mintmark because they were all from the Denver mint. One of the dies got overpolished and/or filled with gunk and some cents were made without the "D"

I thought I read that Philadelphia didn't mint them that year, but sent their dies to denver and that's why there is no mint mark?

Misteroman I would take a look at it for you, but I really reccomend you just send it to PCGS for grading. Very few people will be willing to buy a 22 no D without it being graded. I found this out first hand....

Even if that is true the Denver mint would have punched a "D" into the dies, all mint marks were hand punched at that time.

Either way this baby can book up to $600 (Good) to $11,000 (MS) or close to 385 British pounds in good shape!

Not bad for a penny investment!

PICS PICS PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!

For about $6 on ebay you can find a 60X mini microscope.
They can be pain to work with, but it makes a nickel mintmark look like the size of a cereal box.

Found a penny tonight, dont have much experience w/ errors. Its a zincer with a seemingly normal reverse (memorial). Obverse appears to be extremely lightly struck (no date) and only a faint outline of abe is visible. Outline seems to be centered. Any input would be appreciated.

I'm going to start using that quote in reference to anything that is large in size.

Is the rim worn down on the obverse or is it nice and raised the way it should be? If that is so, then it could be a struck through grease type error. Could be worth a little bit. If the rim is worn down, then it could possibly be that someone took a sander or something to it. That is what I have been told to check for. If it looks lightly struck, etc, feel the rim. If it feels normal, then the possibility is much stronger that it is an error.

Yes the obverse rim is nice and raised. IMO it doesnt appear to be tampered with. The coin was found in a roll but overall in very good shape. After some quick research last night i found the same info about a possible grease error and it looks exactly like the error picture i saw. If it is real they said it may be worth a nice little chunk (possibly 25-35$)

No it's the current and only. 21 years this coming Monday 12/27/89 "a day which will live in infamy"

That's a great nickname for Mrs T ,"hambone". I'm going to change our anniversary cake tomorrow.

"Hambone"

Part of tonight's feast is soup beans, with no hambone in it, and cornbread. My dad and his brothers loved it that way. Guess I got hambone on the brain.

Yea, We're having the same thing we've had every Christmas since 1994.

Pork ribs! The good ones with the backstrap. Been on the smoker since 0800.
