1998 Wide AM Can Someone Verify??

Postby LooseChange » Tue Mar 26, 2013 8:38 pm

I was hoping that someone could verify this coin for me. I think it's a legitimate 1998 WAM, but I'm not sure as this would be the first that I found.

I did some checking online and it looks the part, though its not in the best of shape. I scanned in some images of with some 1999s if it will help with the determination.

Any help will be appreciated :)

The 1st one looks good. The other 2 I say no.

But, your best bet is to have a couple of 1992 cents handy to compare in your hand at the same time. Once you get the spacing down in your brain, it's very easy. I'm told with die wear, a small space will develop between the "A" and the "M". These are not the "wide A M's".

Thanks TJCF,
The coin in question was the first in the photo, those 1999s were just pulled from the Zn pile for a side/side comparison on spacing. When I pull a 1992, the spacing of the A and M is about equal to that on the 1998. Using my 15X loupe, I can't get much closer and I darn sure can't measure it :)

Don't worry HCBTT, I'm on it! Look out 1992s

What, you have time for another coin website?

I like that quote.. but we will let LooseChange CLAM.. that's where the real money is anyway.

Congrats on the 98 WAM LooseChange!

I stared with my loupe at the FG for about 10 minutes back and forth with a "regular" 1998 and it only looks slightly closer to the building. The "AM" is spaced no doubt, but the FG isn't thoroughly convincing to me. I tried measuring the distance (between the building and FG) but the gap is narrower that the width of the pencil lead I marked a piece of paper with. That being said, the other 1998 I was comparing to, had a gap of about 1.2 pencil lead widths.... C'mon really, like I trust myself for something that close.

I need some expert eyes on this for me to be fully convinced, I'll upload another picture tonight and try to get that FG better in focus and LARGER.

Also, if this is a real 1998 WAM, what is the value? I've seen online prices ranging from $5 to $75, the condition obviously has am impact, and this one is far from a Gem.

I've sold most of mine for way less than $5. I think yours is the real deal!

Is there a good resource that lists pricing for these errors? Reading these posts has me interested in looking through my BU coins that I have set aside but really I don't know if I want to squint all night for $2-3 coins I would rather just pick the best years.

This is about the best I could do for better pics
For Comparison, the coin on the right is a regular 1999 and the one on the left is the coin in question, a 1998. The 98 is not in very good shape unfortunately.
