What's the best coin this forum has found?

Postby Tantalar » Mon Jan 17, 2011 10:18 pm

What's the best coin that this forum has found in circulation? Anyone found a really expensive and rare coin?

I remember reading that someone once found a 1909 S VDB. I know Highroller has found two gold coins in his searches.

Gotta think the, not one, but two gold coins found by highroller take the cake. To find gold coins I recommend searching a lot of coins.

I will feel triumphant, and certainly competitive with the two gold coins, when I find the 1856 Flying Eagle in XF condition... that I am searching for. One of these days Image

I think I would need an ambulance and a cardiologist if that ever happened to me.

Other than the 1919-s and a slightly off center die strike on a 1980. I'm very average.

I forgot about that. I know the story to be true.

I am excited to find a 90% half when searching.

I noticed last night when I was half sorting that a Maple leaf was identical in size. I was thinking about slipping it in the return bag, just as kinda a practical joke... but that's how rumors get started. Image

Best coin I've found would probably be that 1922 Canadian Penny.

Best penny I ever spent! :D

Even though it's rare, it's really not that great. I'd have to say PennyPauper's '55 DDO or highroller's GOLD takes the cake.

May not be the rarest or more expensive coins ever found, but it's my coolest.

I'm not even sure it's the right variety right now, i look at it many time with a magnify glass and with multiple scan, i also show it on Canadian coins forums and to one experienced collector. As far as i know the coins is genuine. I will send it to get certified/graded in the next week.

If it's the right one, it will be the only one 1954 NSF Canadian penny ever found in circulation (it's not listed in population report or in coins book) as it's a proof that was only released in uncirculated set.

My best finds were a 1983 DDR that I belive got graded by the buyer at MS64RB, I sold it for $223 and only paid a penny for it. Second nicest find for me was the 2009 Lincoln DDR's, though they were not found in circulated rolls but from the 2 roll mint sets.

Presearving the Past once found a nice 1999 Wide AM while in Disney, had to add that in for her.

I thought it was cool to find a British Penny (the big kind) in a half roll... than I realized that I would have been better off with a terribly worn 1995 Kennedy

Do you search your Zincs for errors? If so how many do you find?

Also do you have a short list of those most worth hunting for?

I have this link:
http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Top50.html

But I thought you may have a shorter list.
I'm looking for those not extremely rare, and that are a significant error that brings a good premium.

So far, I havent searched the zincs for errors. Is it worth the effort overall?

Great finds by the way.

I'm sure these are not rare or expensive but I've found quite a few 1959 and 1960 gem BU lincoln cents mixed in with the regular cents you will find in rolls. These were found in 4 different boxes.

They are so red/orange and pristine that they really stand out when you break open a roll. They look better in person than in the pics.

Any thoughts on where or how they might have found their way into the mix?

I have found a couple hundred 1959 Lincoln BU's as well as a handfull of 1960, 1961, even 1970 BU's. It's just strange to have them turn up this way.
