If it is a 1944 it would have a VDB if it is a 1914 there would be no VDB.

From -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_cent
Brenner's initials (VDB), on the reverse at its base, were deemed too prominent once the coins were issued, and were removed within days of the release. The initials were restored, this time smaller, on Lincoln's shoulder, in 1918.

I say 44-d, as you can see the horizontal bar of the 4 sticking off the right side.

Looks like a 44D to me also. I have one just like it. People try to grind down the front part of the 4 to make it look like a one.

And I also Thank You and all our veterans who have or are still serving in our military!!

the gap between the nine and a four would be about right, but would be too wide if it was a gap between the nine and a one.
Thank you for your service!

It's a bummer, but it happens.
I've got 2 "wide date gap" '14 D's.

What really hurt was when my "Copper" Cent from the year prior stuck to a magnet!
You have to stay on your toes when you're hunting pennies!!!

Glad you made it back and thanks!
