The 2015 Canada Vacation Project

Last year I bought a CTU for $135 ... and handsorting pennies just didn't have the same attraction anymore. It would have been great if I was finding collectibles more often, but after sorting over 100,000 pennies I found an Indian Head Cent, a few wide AM cents, a lot of mostly 1940s and 50s wheat cents, and always about 30% copper. What was more fun than sorting the pennies was seeing what was on the TD Bank magnet when I dumped. Lots of foreign coins, especially Canadian.

So I changed the game up. Every Friday my son and I sort 2 rolls each of pennies, nickels and dimes. We're trying to fill out a Dansco Roosevelt dime and Jefferson Nickel book. Every Saturday we dump the coins and clean up the magnet for them. In 2015 we're taking a vacation in Canada and hopefully we can buy a nice dinner out with the coins we've accumulated. So far we've got $63.98.

This week was good, we got 35 cents copper from sorting, and the magnet gave up $2.56 Canadian (included a $2 coin), a 1943 steel cent, Aruban 5c, 2c Euro. I'll update this thread with our weekly finds.

Rob

You might have you son ask the tellers to save the coin counter junk for him and then when you two stop by the bank you will have a lot more for your trip.

Asking the tellers to clean the magnet for us might end up being like when I bought a CTU ... 'why are we bothering to sort and put money in the machine when the tellers come up with so much Candian $$ for us!'.

We've already got the passports, so we're in good shape there.

It will take about 20 years to fill out a Dansco album Jeffersons searching 4 rolls a week... Roosevelts will probably be harder... but good luck.

Strange week at TD Bank ... the Penny Arcade wasn't working very well, and my coins must have gotten mixed up with part of the coins from a prior customer (whoever used the machine before was long gone and probably didn't realize the machine shorted them). By the time the bank guys got the machine working I was credited with almost exactly $10 extra :D .

Sorting take: 27 cents copper (includes 2 1950s wheats and 1959 Canadian penny)

Penny Arcade take:
55 cents Canadian, another 1943 Steel Cent (two weeks in a row!), 8 Euro cents, 5 Chinese yuan (or rinimbi, or whatever), Cayman Islands dime.

Till next week, Rob

Question for you Rob - Are you and your son on a $25/week budget? Sounds like you are and I'm kind of the same way. What I've been thinking of doing is after I sort through my $25 ox of pennies, when I dump I'm going to try and roll the extra into nickel rolls to sort until I start getting full boxes with my pennies every week. then the extras will roll into dimes and so on. Might help you accumulate more of what you are looking for quicker. I know I haven't started this yet, but next friday is my go time. Anyone else see a problem with this?

Pretty good week, but no great stories this time:

Sorting take: 27 cents / 27% copper - same as last week

Penny Arcade take: 76 cents Canadian, yet another 1943 Steel Cent (three weeks in a row now), 16 Euro cents, Great Britain 10 Pence (first time for one of these)

Well, I wouldn't really call it a budget, but we're sorting $15 per week (2 rolls each of pennies, nickels and dimes). This takes all of about 5 minutes, which is just about my son's tolerance / attention span! Over the past few years I've sorted enough copper that I'm not really in a hurry to accumulate more. We're trying to fill a Jefferson Nickel and Roosevelt dime collection along the way, but the key to what we're doing is to grab the foreign coins that stick to the magnet on the TD Bank sorters each week. We're collecting a lot of foreign coins from all over the world, and a lot of Canadian coins (which we're looking to fund a fancy meal in Canada with in 2015).

I'm not sure I 'get' the $25 strategy you have in mind, but if you're sorting I think most people here would agree that you can't be going wrong.

Do you have Canadian folders also as you are finding Canadian?

Interesting thought. No, we don't have any Canadian folders. We should think about doing the pennies and quarters. We find a decent amount of pre-steel Canadian pennies just sorting. We never find old quarters, but Canada has done some interesting modern quarters (I've noticed quarters for the provinces, the 2010 winter olympics, and breast cancer awareness).

I would get the "Warman's Canadian Cents folder 1920-2012" see-- http://realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=27289&hilit=+Warman%27s also Canada used silver for coins so that is why you find only post 1967 10,25 cent coins.

Pretty quiet week, but not bad for copper cents and Canadian:

Sorting take: 31 cents / 31% copper

Penny Arcade take: 50 cents Canadian (all dimes), surprisingly, that was everything on the magnet.
