Seems to me you may be inadvertently building a nice foreign coin collection which may be as valuable as your "free" Canadian. Unless you are saving these for personal reasons they could provide a nice profit. Also there is a market for Canadian copper which I'm sure you're aware of. Great hobby with your son. Good luck.

The volume and variety of other (non-Canadian) foreign coins is getting pretty overwhelming. Very few of them are worth anything more than face value, but I think in bulk some nationalities might be marketable ... for now I'm accumulating them and we'll figure out what to do with them later. I get all the Euros, GB, Mexican and Caribbean coins. In this area, I even get the Indian coins. But I'm pretty surprised by a lot of the others that end up on the TD Bank magnet (Nepal? Zambia?)!

I asked in my bank to get the "junky" coins from the sorter, and the ones that stick to the magnet, and they looked at me like I was crazy... and, then refused my request like I was trying to steal something from them... They can get really weird here in small-town Idaho... :-~

At TDBank here in NJ the sorters allow relatively easy access to the magnet. I think if I asked, the bank would say 'no' .... so I don't ask. A teller once told me they collect all the coins stuck to the magnet and send them out somewhere and get cash for them. In a fair world the sorter would spit these out and allow the customer to have their foreign coins back ... I don't really understand how they get away with just taking them. I take the coins with no feelings of guilt, because I don't feel the banks have any more right to them than I do, since they were already taken from the original owner.
