Penny roll opinions sought

Postby wagsthadog » Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:15 pm

Hi all!

I recently came into a small horde of estate sale pennies. Lotsa coppers, which was nice, but some rolls in particular caught my eye.

I have 10 rolls that must have been rolled in the late 1970's or very early 80's- all copper, all before 1982, and a good sprinkling of wheats. I know this because I opened two just to know what I was dealing with.

The more exciting rolls are even older; I have 14 more rolls in different wrapper; I venture that they were rolled no later than 1966; I had to open one just to confirm, and there was over 18 wheats, some older dates too! There are wheat enders on some of these unpoened rolls, nothing fabulous though.

all 24 rolls are machine rolled. Do you guys think I should open them or keep them rolled? If anything I'd open the 1970's rolls first...

Unless you may want to sell them as "unsearched rolls" I would open them

If it was me, I'd open them. Otherwise, you may always be curious about what "might" have been in there. If you open them, it will remove all doubts. Also, if you then sell them, you will be more likely to get a fair price and not have someone come back and complain that they didn't like what was inside.
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

Please note that ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- sometimes substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) as well.

If it's bugging you so badly, just ship them to me and I'll open them for you! Don't worry, I'll send them right back. Just don't be surprised if they pick up a few zincolns in transit. :D

What if you don't open them? Would you always wonder if there were any early Lincolns or Indian Pennies? I say open those suckers! Let the treasure hunt begin!

Sell those rolls on ebay, then buy more pennies from your bank.
