Went to a church service that talked about pennies...

Postby henrysmedford » Wed May 20, 2015 7:33 pm

My younger son and I attended a Lutheran church service in Ashland, OR. The church is kind enough to let my son's violin group practice there. http://www.siskiyouviolins.org/ Once a year, the group performs during the service as a thank you. During the service, they hold a small service for the children, and the pastor was talking about the two small copper coins that the widow gave as a lesson of generosity. He had a small cup full of pennies and started talking about them. He pulled out a couple of Canadian pennies and asked if there were any Canadians in the service and said that they could probably use them. He also pulled out some mutilated pennies that he had found in a grocery store parking lot and said that they were still worth a cent and that God looks at each looks at each one of us is like that coin, and it doesn't make a difference of how we look. He finally ended by giving each child two brand new 2015 pennies and stated that they were copper.

As you know, my younger son is not the coin collector, but on the way home from the service, I asked my son what he thought about it, and he said, "They don't use pennies in Canada anymore.." He also said mutilated pennies are worthless and new pennies are zinc. We had a nice conversation on the way back about intent of the service.

I think a good message could be given about the fact that it is what is inside that counts. The cent may be shiney on the outside, but on the inside are you copper or zinc.

Woe unto you, Zlincolns and plated steel Canadians, for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward....
And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel
For nothyng is better than lyberte
For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world

If you want, let Franklin know that Portland Mint can buy mutilated coin and send it in to the government to be melted.

Interestingly, United States Mint personnel also believe that more half dollars have been redeemed by China-sourced vendors in the last 10 years than the United States Mint has ever manufactured in its history," according to a forfeiture complaint filed in U.S. District Court on March 20 by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lakshmi Srinivasan Herman.

JOG, I saw that story, half dollars are less than 1% of the mutilated we send in, so the fact that these guys were sending in truckloads and getting paid goes to show how incompetent our gov't is, but at least they were able to get some of the money back.
