What are the chances that the US Mint would begin to confiscate the copper pennies without public knowledge?

I don't think it would be possible to do without someone in the business talking about it. If they were going to do something I am sure we would all know about it within a few weeks.

Highroller is right. (as usual) That is just too much metal moving around not to attract a lot of attention. Not to mention the stir it would cause in the processing equipment business which is actually a pretty small community. Plus any number of other good reasons...
