Another New Guy from Florida

Postby Richard » Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:45 pm

Hi all,

Just another new guy from Florida here. I live in Spring Hill, which is north of Tampa along the Gulf coast. I've been lurking for a few months, and figured I better say hello.

I've been hand sorting for silver for a while now, and recently started doing copper also. Hand sorting rolls from banks in the area generally have gotten me about 20-25% copper, which isn't too bad compared to my stats on silver! I just picked up a Ryedale Sniper, so I hope to increase my hoarding in the coming months.

For what it is worth, I saw that Publix (supermarket chain here in Florida) has there own Coinstar-like sorter with a charge of only 8%, which is better than the 9.8% Coinstar wants. Maybe this will help someone.

Funny, I also recently discovered my local Publix has its own sorter, too.
Afterwards, I was kicking myself for all the unnecesary dollars I threw at coinstar; meh- money runs in cycles, right? :lol:

Anyway, welcome to the forum, Richard- and best of luck sorting.

By the way, I stopped sorting for silver after the % got too low to mess with (about 1-2 out of every $1000);

try going to a vystar bank if there is one near you. They have a coin star machine that is free to members and only 5% for non-members.

edited to say, Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for all of the welcome notes.

sanitarium_inmate - No Vystar banks in my area. The closest looks like Gainesville, maybe 1 1/2 hours from the house. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Red King - Yeah the silver numbers are awful. I've been sorting for a while, and in the past year I didn't manage any silver from the bank. About halfway through the year, I stopped sorting completely. However, I did stop off for a beer with a few guys from work one night, and when the waitress brought my change back, I heard a silver dime hit the table. Most of the guys thought I lost my mind the way I reacted when I heard it! :)

Hi Richard, I'm a newbie too. How do you like the Ryedale Sniper? I don't know that I'll sort enough to justify the Apprentice model for $500, so I was considering the Sniper as well as the Penny Miser.

As far as dumping zincs, there are some banks that offer free sorting without the fee. There is a TD Bank in my area that will allow you to turn in coins for free using their "Penny Arcade" machine. I'll be testing them out over the next few weeks as I start turning in all my zincs from my hand sorting.

Welcome to the forum. I too live in FL. (Polk Co.) I was buying from a flea market guy. He was telling me he was getting 20 -25% copper from his bank buys. He also used to sort through half dollar bags, but I believe he stopped because the amount of 40% JFKs he was getting was so low.

I like the Sniper. It's a lot faster than handsorting, but not fast enough... :)
