$25 Bank Box of Pennies

Postby bradjames12 » Fri Oct 27, 2017 7:35 pm

My wife recently started working for PNC and brought home a $25 bank box of pennies. I don't own a scale, so pulled out pre 1981 pennies.

$5.11 in copper pennies

Pulled out 9 Wheat Pennies
1919 S, 41, 45, 46, 50, 51, 52 and two 57's

You can build a balance with tongue depressor with a Q-tip glued in middle and zinc cent on one end.
Fast check for hard to read Date :)

I'd call that a good box. Any Canadian copper with that? Here in upstate NY I usually get a hair more CA Cu than Wheats.

No Canadian, but did find a dime in one of the rolls. Nice and shiny, figured it would have been ugly to be in a roll of pennies.

I picked up 10 rolls of pennies yesterday, along with one roll of dimes and 5 rolls of nickels just for the fun of it.

Not sorted yet, but one of the nickel rolls shows a Buffalo nickel on one of the ends! Who knows, maybe I will find something interesting!

So you are a tad bit of 20% Cu....with 9 wheats and a dime to boot....a good box indeed...welcome to the "found a dime in my pennie rolls" club. Good to have an "in" at a bank. Don't forget to tell her to buy all the half & big dollars. And if Thogey's widow shows up with a box full of CWR's buy all those too!

Finished sorting these. The Buffalo Nickel was just a modern day Jefferson! Nothing special in the nickels. Nothing in the dime roll. The penny rolls were better though. Almost 100 coppers and 4 wheat pennies. Not bad I guess.

Hey Dragon, it's been a couple of years since we talked last, still sorting myself, not allot, but still into the game, especially with winter, a little something to distract and use up some of my .. alone time. I still put my tracking into the tracking threads.

The 1982 pennies are visibly different with more relief on the obverse, the zinc and copper look different, zinc will turn more orange, where copper has more of that red we have come to know, you can also flip the penny and the zinc goes thud, the copper rings.

Sorted 20 FV of pennies last night. I found a decent amount of coppers, 9 Wheats, and 2 Canadian pennies......not bad I guess.

Something to do!

If you're sorting $50 FV or less. You might want to expand the process to look for zinc varieties.

I just hand sorted 9 cwr's I got today from my favorite teller. Dismal. 63 Lincolns and 1 Wheat (1944).... 14.222%......... Do I ever miss those days when it was normal to pull 33% coppers.
When I die, I want to go like Grandpa did. He died in his sleep..... Not screaming and hollering like all the passengers in his car.
