Keep your fingers crossed!

During a House subcommittee hearing held in July, the Director of the United States Mint had requested that Congress delegate authority to the Secretary of the Treasury to select coin compositions. A bill recently introduced by the head of the subcommittee instead seeks to impose greater Congressional oversight of coin production. The Treasury of the Secretary would be granted authority to perform “research and development” necessary to make recommendations to Congress related to coin compositions.

:?: :?: :?: For a metal change or not? Change in coin composition could result in lifting the penny and nickel melt ban. I don't have near enough 'bullion' yet!

My guess would be steel with a copper flashing like the Canadian cents so as not to signal to much of a change. Then after a few years switch to aluminum or eliminate the cent altogether...depends on how fast the dollar drops in value.

I belive that they will just do what a lot of other countries have done and that is just eliminate the penny.

^^^^^^^What highroller said.

Isn't Canada thinking of deep sixing their 1¢? If they do, I think the U.S. will be right behind them. In the meantime, I'm stashing Jeff's and copper cents as fast as possible.

Yes, for the past 6 months Canada has been doing a study on pennies and if they really need thm and if its cost effective to keep them around. In the bill it says there will most likely be the same study in the U.S.
