Grabbed a box and a half of nickels today from my CU. What will I find? A herd of Buffalo?

Either way, the nickel archives continue to grow....as does the stack!

Sorted through 1.5 boxes of nickels tonight...the only real highlight is I found a 2009d :o

Filled up a number of my tubes though...the archives are progressing well. Getting harder to fill up, especially as I venture into the 1950's. But I'm doing this by getting boxes from the CU and whatever I get back in everyday change...

Picked up yet another box of nickels today! A great opportunity to add to my nickel archives....and the overall hoard of Cupro-nickels :)

I also picked some from French .999 nickel too at my LCS while rummaging through their foreign bin. Found about 20 coins....and decided to verify the purity of the nickels before I go through
the whole thing! Now that I know they are pure nickel....guess where I'm going to tomorrow? ;)

AND...picked up 2 Englehard Prospector silver one ounce rounds to boot! Nice looking....just wish I could have bought another 18 of em' :(

I save 59 and older. There may be some merit in saving 63 and older, but I would personally recommend that you send back all the 64's. Those will never be rare. Well, maybe after the melt ban is lifted and nickel is $20/pound. :D

I have a new box to sort that I picked up the other day. Hopefully, I will be able to get more goodies! I do save all nickels that don't end up in my archives.

Results after 1/2 of a box tonight....I filled up 2 tubes for my archives, plus I found a Euro 5 cent piece and a 20 Pence among the rolls.

What will the other half yield? Hopefully a 2009! ;)

Yeah, I really wouldn't save 64 and older. 64 has the highest mintage ever, although it's probably not the most common in circulation due to attrition. Some people save all pre- 70, in which case you may as well save 64s... maybe... but if you save 64s, you should also save the rarer 65-67... in other words... draw the line at 59, 63, or 69, not at 64.

(Personally, I just save pre-60.)

Each tube I have represents every year and mintmark. I'm trying to fill up each one as far back as I can.

I have a separate tube for War nickels and Buffalos.

I want so say the the compesitiong changed in 59 and the ones pre-60 are worth something like 7.5 cents right now.

No, the composition is the same. The exception is the war nickels with the large mintmark. They are 35% silver. The 1959 cutoff is for Lincoln pennies from wheat to memorial.

Yes, 1964 was the highest due to the removal of silver from the rest of our coins. I seem to find at least 1 1964 in most every roll I check! I agree with what you say about which to save for sure. I put them in rolls separate.

I found a 2009-D, a Canadian cupronickel and a 20 pence coin. Completed 3 more full tubes for my collection.

No war nicks or buffalos to be found....maybe next time.

Am saving every nickel I can lay my hands on - change and buying rolls right now - not doing boxes...yet.

Can someone tell me what the significance of the 2009-D is?

Thanks

2009 was a low mintage for Dimes and Nickles, both mints.
You don't run across them too often.

Most folks interested in coins think they will rise in value as the years pass, so they get a little excited and like to post when they find one.

FWIW, out of 105 boxes, I have yet to see a 2009.

I was surprised to see this thread revived, but glad to see it! We really all need to use currency in order to make sure we can use it in the future. Nickels are worth keeping though out of all the coin/currency out there.
