2009 Nickels

Postby Larkin » Mon Jan 31, 2011 12:24 pm

I was curious as to if anyone knows how much 2009 nickels are bringing in the market place. I have heard 10 cents each but I thought it was higher. Has anyone seen them for sale and if so, what is the going rate per nickel. They sure are hard to find as I have only found 1 in 4 boxes.

Only 86.6 million of them minted:

These used to go much higher in 2009 and early 2010. Now, you can get a box of 50 for $255 shipped. They go for more in smaller quantities.

US business slowdown in 2009. They are scarce, but not rare.

I had found a number of 2009D and asked a local coin shop if they were interesed in any...I brought in 13 of them and he gave me 20 cents apiece. A few weeks later I brought in some more but he said he had enough but could use some 2009P.
I had found only 2 of those and on my next visit there he checked them out pretty good and then gave me 50 cents each for those 2. He said there is not much demand but he wanted some if a customer asked.

A lot of nickels pas through my hands and I've yet to find an '09 from either mint. I wonder what percent actually went into circulation and what percent was purchased at banks etc. and just held as an investment due to the lower mintage

Since 2009 was the year our son married and I look for all 2009 coins for their anniversary coin jars, I am still very surprised at the extremely low number of 2009 nickels that I have found. I have found two in the last month and that is cause for celebration as I have found less than ten in total!!!

I don't think they were bought up by banks. Most rolls went for sale on eBay early on and the people that bought them are holding on to them, IMO. Probably very similar to what happened with the 1950D nickel.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. :geek:

It’s been TEN YEARS since the last response on this 2009 nickel posting. Dimes that year were also quite scarce. Anyone still collect any of them or have any interest in them?

Please note that ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- sometimes substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) as well.

I keep all that I find and I have found very few. I think I have found about 5 or 6 since 2009.
