Worth Saving pre-1960 nickels?

I was a hand sorter of nickels that I bought from the bank several years ago and saved all the pre-1960 nickels.

Is it worth keeping these or would you just put them back in circulation?

I know someone who pays 7 cents each for pre-59’s and 59-P’s. That’s not too exciting, frankly.

You might consider trying to get 9-10 cents each for them at your local coin club or a local coin show.

The premium on early Jefferson nickels is low. Typically, after removing War Nicks, Key Dates, better condition, and errors of various types, I divide into two date ranges. 1938-1949, and 1950-1959. When I have a box (2000 coins), I list them at $400/box and $300/box, respectively. Do I get that? Sometimes.

I have saved them, since day one of sorting. I have them sorted to solid date,mm.
One day soon I have to decide on their future.

As of this post nickel value is still over face value based on metal content. I save them all. But one day my kids will have to get rid of them... there is a post here with nickel mintage some have much lower numbers than the rest.

Excellent thread which has been touched upon in the past in other threads. I know a dealer that pays 6.25 cents per ($2.50 per roll). I suspect there are other dealers paying the same price. There are also dealers that absolutely will not buy them except for 1950 D or UNC rolls (good luck finding those!!!!!). But most importantly, I successfully SELL these for 3-4 dollars per roll (coins range from G to F condition). Just sold a roll of 1946 for 4 dollars at a flea market last Sunday. Sold 7 rolls of pre 1960 at that same flea market a few weeks ago. I have only been selling 1946-1959, but I am thinking about selling some 1939, 1940, 1941 since I have almost three thousand of those.
