Ammo cans.. Nickel rolls fit perfect in the .30cals. Or if they are loose I put them in the plastic cans coffee comes in nowadays.

Rolled back in bank boxes by types; prewar, Pre 82 CA, S Mint, 50's & 51s (For some reason I find all 50 and 51 nickels rare), Buffaloes, War Nickels. V nickels go in with buffaloes.

Loose nickels first got into a shoe box that slips right under my computer desk -- and out of sight. My gf who uses the same desk never knew the box was there for a good year until one day I "whipped it out" in front of her.

Once that gets nearly full, I transfer them over to a plastic gallon iced tea jug. I'm working on my third jug. All three are in my closet -- out of sight.

I have noticed this as well when I'm sorting nickels. 46' is high I'm assuming because after WWII they went back to producing the normal nickels, but for some reason 50's 51's and 52's I don't see alot of. I have them from every year from 38-59, except those three years.

^ That's crazy because I just got my first $10.00 worth ( 5 rolls ) from the bank the other day and found a 1938. I knew it was old and researched it and was pretty stoked since it was the first year after the buffalo's.

After searching them for pre-1960, SWs etc, I roll them and put them in brinks boxes. I found a dateless Buffalo the other day.

I know they stop making nickels out of nickels in Canada (some 51, 52-54, they are in steel) for this reason, maybe they did it too in the US.

In cardboard boxes from the bank. Penny and nickel boxes both and rolled coins take up less space and give me a general idea of how much and where it's kept.

MO-SILVER...good call on the 30 Cal cans...I believe James Rawles (survivalblog.com) recommended something similar as well. Although I'm wondering if silica-gel dessicant is recommended for long-term storage, regardless of whether you're storing in cans or original bank boxes (cardboard).

Anyone care to comment? I'm just starting to store some older coins and coppers in a dark cold basement with bad air. I have noticed that various (non-PM) metals in the damp basement tend to corrode in less than a year, even if the item is covered, sealed or boxed.

Yea I've been keeping the pure 999Ni in rolls since to me they are the "premium stuff".

"Junk Ni" (USA Nickels) go in buckets.
