Marked Halfs

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:41 pm

Just finished my first $500 box of halfs. It had a lot of marked coins. The 3 top marks were "511"in purple, a black mark covering the "E" in LIBERTY, and other has a black mark covering "TRUST".

Has anyone seen these?

I'm just southeast of Chicago and just wondering about coin movement!

Thanks.

I have seen those marks over the letters at the top for a while. Usually they mean the box is a skunk, but not always. The mark over the we trust on the front, is a new one I have seen recently. It is a short horizontal slash with a Sharpee or some similar magic marker. I am in a suburb of Detroit. Those trust mark boxes have been skunks for me. I have told my bank to cancel my standing order for two boxes a week.

I've seen the E in Liberty. I also had a purple 511 last night.

Is it a bad sign to have 90+ marked coins out of a $500 box?

Yep, in WI I've found the one with trust marked. I've been pulling all the marked ones out and trying to make a mental note of them, but their are so many marked, and I've taken an interest in them when nothing else to be found. I had a skunk box a few weeks ago with $60 dollars worth all marked the same, purple slash across the front, and 4 more skunk boxes since then, with various markings, but not like the one. Still, I plug away.

typically the ones I see marked are on the back side or initials.

I often see marks covering one of the letters in "LIBERTY." Sometimes E, sometimes another letter. These marks are in various colors. The 511 and TRUST marks are new to me. I've yet to see one of BamaJoe's J's. I'm in northeast Ohio.

In Northern Indiana, we've seen all kinds of markings. From intials, small numbers, big numbers, slashes, ear marks, Trust highlighted. Still going through boxes, though the return is continues to go down of course with all the people sorting these days.

I’ve never seen any of those, only the occasional black line across the reverse.

I have to admit that all the 1992-present proofs that I find get the ole silver sharpie to the rim. Must make sure other roll searchers are paying attention.

Link is messed up, but manually typed it in my phone. I have not seen a large SM in black marker on any halves I search here in Indy.

There was a halves sorter in San Diego about a year ago doing HUGE volumes of halves with those initials. 300 boxes a month or so, if I remember correctly.

SDMarasso. Don't know if he's still searching as I no longer am myself, so I don't keep up with the tracking threads.

Yeah SM is my mark. I am in San Diego. I was going through about 300 boxes a month for about 2 years but I'm not anymore. It was actually quite comical. I had the big banks all in a pissy mood about it. They called the US Marshall on me and 6 detectives showed up at my house but i wasnt doing anything wrong so nothing came of it. These banks don't like it when you make money off of them lol. They had to pull from the LA Federal reserve to fill my orders. They did NOT like me at all. I was told I did the most volume in the county and possibly LA too. It got really old though dealing with the banks. Giving my attention to other pursuits now. I got mine though lol. All locked up and put away in a very safe place far from my house. The banks all pretty much blacklisted me eventually and brinks doesnt like me either. They are all a bunch of lazy punk asses. The whole financial system is.

Oh also for anyone in southern california the banks are onto this gig. Also sorting isnt what it used to be. The public is starting to get wise to silver. Honestly i quit because of the stress and it just wasnt worth it anymore.

Well that's a new distance record for my J's. It would be hard to beat that unless some turn up in Alaska or Hawaii.
