OK thanx, at least my find wasn't a total lost. Found 3 wash. qtrs, 2 mercs, 1 rosie, & 1 canadian in an old wooden box that was put away for years. There was about 15 foreign coins in the mix, I knew the canadian was silver and was pretty sure the mex. was. Live & Learn :)

i picked this one up(and 10 more) at the flea market for $1 each, i thought i was getting over on the seller, when i got home i found that it sticks to a magnet. its a pretty good copy, it rang pretty sweet, that was the only test i could give it. ive heard of fake cuatemocs floating around but never these.

Came across these fakes the other day and decided to post them as a training aid. See link.

I believe that I read on Coinflation last week that they're working on a version for Mexican silver coins. (I presume gold coins, too.)

Due to the varying fineness of silver in the same denomination coin (example--5 peso), it becomes very important to know what you're buying before bidding or pulling an item from a dealer junk box.

Mexico has a long history of prolific silver production. That's reflected in their coinage. In many instances, though, the fineness of the Ag or even the size of the coin can radically change from year to year.

My advice is to look at all designs for their size and silver content. Pick no more than 5 you like and focus on those to acquire. Even set up your own cheat sheet in case you forget the ASW of these coins when making that last minute bid on e-Bay. Very few of the 20th Century silvers are scarce, so your choices should be plentiful wherever you want to purchase them.

Avoid chasing the small stuff like the silver 20 centavo pieces or the .100 fine larger one peso coins from about 1957-66. (Those are being sold on e-Bay and other venues for big money. Sellers call them "rare" and their size leads one to believe they're chock full of silver. In truth, one of these contains less silver than a war nickel. Buyer beware.)

Great way to own silver overall, IMHO. The melting pot doesn't care about the country of a coin's origin, but you should care about what you purchase.

The tough thing is that the amount of silver varies so much through the years...

A lot of the 1 Peso and larger coins actually list the weight and/or fineness right on them. When they reduced it to .300 fine in '50, they stopped that practice on the 1 Peso. The Centavo coins had the same fineness for a given year (in the earlier years), so if you can keep track of the Peso fineness, you can help keep yourself out of trouble.

Just watch out for those frickin' fakes... Image

Filipine silver

Postby cheeple » Fri Aug 17, 2012 4:45 am

I know this is off topic but I got this 10 centavo piece which says "United states of America" on the front and "10 centavos filipinas" on the back, evidently back in 1944 the U.S. govt was minting the coinage for the Phillipines, Kinda funny how they spell it wih an F though, it has a little over $1.00 in silver in it.
I will send you a free silver dime, just go here: http://www.cashcrate.com/443331 earn $10 for yourself then I'll send it to you!

The Phillipines were ruled by Spain at one time, not Greece, which has long insisted on complicating our spelling rules. Teddy Roosevelt decided that the inhabitants of that Asian country must be attacked because they didn't even know how to spell the name of their own country. So first he had the precursor of the CIA sink a warship named Maine in the Havana harbor which served as a great way to create a crisis in the minds of the American sheeple and meant that people half a world away must die also.

Look at this. I bet you can instantly recognize it: telefono...see, we don't need no stinkin' ph's.

It's hard for me to believe old TR would do such a thing. Spain always insisted they had nothing to do with it. Could it have simply been an honest error by the personnel on the Maine?

Years later as President, TR locked up millions of acres of public land into the Forest Service, BLM, National Park Svc, and a few other agencies. He kicked thousands of "squatters" off their homesteads when that land was seized.

Still, I just don't want to make the leap TR was a mass murderer. TR was a mid-level politician when the Maine was blown up, wasn't he? How did he have the where-with-all to pull such a dastardly deed?
