Why are coins stamped in this manner?

I seem to recall a thread here devoted to strange coin stampings. Mostly on cents.

Might've been on the old forum?

I used to set them aside. Had almost half of the outlines of US states at one time.

No apology needed. I actually spent a few minutes trying to find the thread, with no luck.

It's an interesting genre. Folks have been stamping coins with all sorts of symbolism since we've had coins probably.

We could always start another "Post your Marked Coins Here"

Not sure why the markings are added, but to me I’d rather have a marking like that than I would have a heavily scratched coin. The letter has more character to it and might be a point of interest to some.
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

Please note that ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- sometimes substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) as well.

Those type of markings are known as countermarks or counterstamps. I am absolutely certain that there are other equivalent terms used.

A list of merchants that counter stamped coins:

That is a very good guide for merchant counterstamps. The term, however, has come to mean anything stamped onto the coin post mint. I used to stamp my initials onto Lincolns when I was a kid some 55 years ago.

Again, thank you for linking to an excellent reference.
