Finders-Keepers has been involved in searching for treasures based on spurious legends for quite some time. Never successful as far as I know.

The Dents Run story has several versions, none of which have any verifiable information. Each mentions Union Soldiers, or Army Contractors moving gold and, depending on the version, getting lost, falling ill, stealing the gold, or a variety of other things causing the gold to be buried. None of the names in any version have been verified by records of the era. No record of lost, stolen, or missing gold can be found that is related to that region. The earliest published mention of the story was in an adventure magazine published in the early 1900s. Several versions of the story were published in the 1950s and 1960s by various treasure and adventure magazines.

Believe what you will, but my opinion is that Finders-Keepers, through its principals, is far more effective at fundraising than anything else, and not very adept at that.

The best thing to do when researching is to follow the evidence, not your desire, your opinion, or anything else. Just evidence. If the purported “facts” in any treasure legend can not be verified, it is not worth putting boots on the ground.

Time for more coffee.

The part that bothers me about it is, if there was apparently that much gold buried there, I can't believe the FK crew would say "ok no problem" when told to go home for the night. My butt would have been there with a shovel, especially had I been the one to lead them to the proposed location!

isnt that something?

Thanks for uploading the two articles, (never thought i'd dig into an "Atlantic" article, about a quarter of the way in that article, it sure went off the rails...y'know sometimes i wish these "journalists" would quit writing these limp wristed screeds, and write akin to an intelligence briefing....anyway, Galenrog, thanks for the brief about the "finders keepers"......guess them boys forget what we are FORCED to do every 15 April)

the way parse it is like this; there are 3 groups.

FBI (apologies to any of you guys who SERVED, its the leadership i'm gonna speak about) who was the "father" of the FBI?....a closet transvestite queer, married to his second in command?.......so the culture of the FBI has been bent for decades....but 7-9 tonnes of Au?

Finders Keepers ..........them boys aint got no sense at all!!!!! LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!!!!
what is the matter with them?.......IF the Au is there.....and the historical proof wasnt catergorzed as "Lore"

1863 Yank's....the last ones to actually have possession of this purported Au......

possibilities .....A. their CO and XO were bent, and plotted to steal it....they could only head west into Indian Territory

or B they were set upon by a Confed guerrila unit............and next stop New Orleans to the mint....(just guessing)

I think I would be totally blown away if that tale is fake. And to know that the son is a cop? I love it.
