What price would you buy ASEs ?

Postby Thogey » Wed Apr 19, 2023 8:48 pm

My favorite Ag bullion coin. They were about $20 for a long time.

The premiums are ridiculous IMO. Where do you guys buy now?

Absurd is more like it.

I used to buy 100 ASEs every year. Haven't bought any ASEs since 2019. I won't buy any at these premiums.

My stack is fairly substantial. Don't really need anymore. Anything I get now is just icing on the cake.

Eagles are also my favorite silver coin, but I have not bought any Eagles for years because of the ridiculous premiums. The mint is supposed to produce enough to meet demand which they have not done for years creating the shortage on Eagles.

What o you think would be a reasonable premium?

Well, I would say if the premium was in line with silver bullion $3 to $4 per ounce I would be buying Eagles because that's all they are to me is an ounce of silver.

I agree with NDFarmer. I like ASEs, but not so much that I'm willing to pay a huge premium just because the Mint has trouble sourcing planks. There's plenty of acceptable .999 bullion to be had for more reasonable premiums.

I'm waiting for Thoegy to kick the bucket so I can follow his widow to the bank. I'll buy 'em all for face value of $1 each!

As I was thinking about this, I couldn't help but think to myself the oft made refrain that silver prices are artificially suppressed, and/or the gold to silver ratio is way off and silver should be valued much higher.

If these statements are true... wouldn't the current premiums be a steal?

For me, I will likely buy at any price, if I have the cash to spare. I'm a very small time buyer though, and much of the reason I buy is for personal pleasure/enjoyment rather than preperation/hedging/investment. I don't generally hold duplicates of years, unless they have toning I like. So, I guess ultimately, if I buy an ASE for $50, and I enjoy looking at it, and owning it; whether its market value is $10 or $100 becomes somewhat immaterial (although... at $100, that personal enjoyment factor can definitely be swayed). I have 2 ASE's I bought when silver was at $37/oz (I think I paid $48/ea)... I don't regret it, and still have them, and occasionally lay them at the feet of Moloch to gain favor.

Too late dude. I AM thogey's widow :( . 30 years of marriage and she beat me to the grave on 20 May 2020. That will be my first and last marriage. Talk about irony.

Just this minute I watched an extended infomercial for a complete set of heraldic eagle ASE's, as graded MS69 by NGC. 36 coins / $2995.00. "Folks, that's less than 84 dollars per coin!"

He sets up the spiel by showing a bunch of ebay listing prices...$650 for this one, $1100 for that one, blah blah...

Then it's all "limited number of sets available", and "end of the heraldic design era", and of course "inflation bad"

*sigh*

What is it about fancy plastic holders that lead people to think a coin is magically worth 4x it's actual value?

They are "heraldric" man! Plus MS69! Plus NGC. Plus people who pay stupid money beget more people who pay stupid money!

lol

Yeah, I stop on those infomercials every once in awhile, just to listen to the spiel. It's quite the scam.

Yeah, ouch. I'm sure he hadn't kept up with member news. Irony or not, I still think about this, and my heart aches for you.
