I would say its clearly not USD or Sterling, but they are in the Big Five, so I included them. A deflationist would say USD is just fine, so its open to debate!

"Swiss franc" or "French franc"? Swiss might be the least unsafe of the whole lot, considering how much illegal money they take in and their hard headed bankers, but I "put not my faith in faith money".

I think the best part about the aussie dollar is that it offers very high interest rates compared to other first world countries. But its still nothing next to the gains in gold and silver.

My vote was for the $ of our friendly neighbor to the North. I've been watching the rise this week of the Singapore dollar. It's at an all-time high against the US buck. This seems to be a big deal in the international markets, but I haven't been able to find out the reason why this is happening.

Singapore is basically a capitalist paradise, other than gun laws. Along with Hong Kong its one of the last bastions of serious economic freedom. My guess is that they don't feel the need to print a lot of money since they have a dependable tax base and small government.

Oz Dollar for me... huge (and I mean VAST) resource reserves in the ground. Divide that wealth by the number of Australians, and that's why I like the AUD over the others.

odd fact: During the Thanksgiving holiday travel season, the United States has more people in airplanes than the Australians have on the ground

norway or switzerland have significantly fewer problems than the others. don't know much about Sweden.

however, the CHF has appreciated substantially and is hurting exports and thus tax revenues.

Norway is tied to oil and has a small population, so small changes can have a big effect.

I voted Swiss Franc, based on the literal survey wording. If it had been worded differently - most practical relatively-safe currency for North Americans - I might have voted for the CDN-$. I don't view the Chinese Yuan as terribly safe at this point for several reasons, the most compelling is that while the Chinese may be making efforts to move to a non-fiat currency, until they complete that (if they do), they are at risk for a horrible crash themselves.

Disagree that it's a "fools errand" - but it is a mostly academic exercise.

Swiss franc is leaving all others in its wake. Really strong showing today against the US $ and the Euro. Makes me wonder if this and a new all-time high for gold is more than a coincidence.

I am surprised Canada is winning. They won't let the Loonie rise too much above the US Dollar because we are their main trading partner. Even if it has good fundamentals, their Central Bank won't allow it to appreciate much.

I believe this is exactly why Canada is winning this poll as a reserve currency. Considering land mass and the accompanying natural resources, they have the option to allow the Loonie hover near the Dollar. How long will the Canadian Central Bank allow forced depreciation against the Dollar if Obammy can't learn how to wear big boy pants? There has to be a breaking point.
