CIVIL WAR TOKENS!

Postby uthminsta » Thu Dec 06, 2012 6:23 pm

Post, track, discuss anything at all about Civil War tokens. Some previous threads about individual finds are below, but I thought it would be good to have ALL our gathered knowledge in one thread, so I propose this thread become that hub.

In Feb 2011 PENNY PAUPER found one, discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3854
no pictures available.
In Aug 2011 COMMON CENTS found one, discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8008

In Sep 2011 SILVERHEDGEHOG found one, discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8626

In Oct 2011 THEJONASCOLLEGEFUND found two? discussed here: http://www.realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8800

For what it's worth, I have 3, all found at coin shops. I would like to learn more about these. Will put pics up later, if I can get my scanner working again.

EDIT: I now have two. I sold one to THEJONASCOLLEGEFUND... the two I still have are shown.

I'm still waiting to find one of these.... :(

First, one of the two identical 1863 Dix tokens I've found, and the reverse.

Next, the 1864 Lincoln and Union token.

Good thread! I don't have any finds from sorting, but one I found in some coins that were given to me prompted me to find out what these were all about. As a result, I've discovered I'm more interested in oddities, tokens, SCD's and such than I am in actual legal-tender coins. What I really love about CWT's and Hard Times tokens is the history of the times, and the circumstances leading up to their circulation, which are not unlike our own interesting times and the rise of things like Liberty Dollars and other alternative currencies.

Anyone else fine one of these in their sorting? Or own any at all?

One of my greatest coin success stories ever:
I bought the Lincoln and Union token at a coin shop from a tray that said "EXONUMIA: 5 for $1." I put it on eBay with a $149 opening bid and it SOLD!

Can you even believe that?!?!

Nice story.

I need help. I cannot post the pics of my two tokens. The site says the files are too big.
