2012 Metal Detecting Thread

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Sun Jan 01, 2012 10:22 pm

Please post all of your 2012 metal detecting finds here. Seeing all of the interest that the 2011 Metal Detecting Thread received this past year, I thought I'd take over the thread and expand on the finds for this year.

I think the members will be very interesting in all of our finds.

Please post any treasures first! Of course this will be gold, platinum, or silver!

# of pieces of jewelry....real or junk.

# of silver coins found.

# of wheat/indian head pennies found.

# of total coins found.

# of each type of coin found......zinc or copper pennies, dimes, nickles,....etc.

You may add anything else that you find.....! Keys, buttons, or whatever. And pictures.....WE LOVE PICTURES!

I will be doing a running total for all catagories.

Great weather here too! I took Jonas on his first treasure hunt. He got the Bounty Hunter Jr. For Christmas. His first find..... the old stlye pull-tab. He ended a very short hunt with one zinc penny.

On January 6th I took advantage of the balmy January weather and went for a coin shoot at
a county park along a creek and found a St. Christopher medal. Sterling .925 stamped on the back
of it. It's not real big....just 4.3 grams but it came out of the ground looking brand new. I'll hang onto it
as just another find. Gotta admit it did give me alittle rush!

I don't have anything up to date to use for posting pictures. Planning on getting a scanner soon so when
I do, I'll post a pic.

Jonas, that ATPro you got there is a nice piece of equipment. One of my sons uses one and his silver finds and gold
ring finds went up in 2011. And that was hunting over areas that he had already hunted with a Ace 250.

Yepper...I still go back to my Ace250 hunting grounds with the ATPro and KEEP finding stuff. And, the best part is being able to learn and know when or when not to dig. The VDI feature kicks but. So, where in Illinois are you...we should get together and get a hunt in or two....just borrow your son's fun toy! Well, maybe after this new bout of winter comes in tomorrow. May get 8 inches of snow with lots of drifting. May be a month or so before I get back out.

I'm still swinging a 250 but my son and folks such as yourself are convincing me to step up a notch or two. Right now I'm looking at a Gti 2500 or a Minelab Safari. I'm located between Bloomington and Lincoln in the central part of the state. You?
Keep me in mind and I'll do the same with getting together for a coin shoot. I bet my son would be interested in joining
in too. Maybe late winter or early spring when the ground is nice and wet?

I got out yesterday knowing that it WILL be the last hunt for awhile. I used my waterproof ATPro during the beginning of the snow storm. The wet snow clung to my coil and made it harder and heavier to swing. It was fun! Last year I wasn't able to get out until late February....so it maybe a few weeks! This goofy winter weather(WARM) in the Chicagoland area has me puzzled!

Anyway I did ok...no bling or silver or wheats. I hit a gas station slated for demolition and I re-visited the local little league field....but not ON any field. Totals below.

13-quarters
9-dimes
1-nickel
20-pennies(have to clean the mud and clay off)

Total 43 coins for $4.40

I have been looking at the ATPro to upgrade my entry level bounty hunter purchased a number of years ago, always looking for more bells and whistles. Actually, my question stems around the use of the ATPro with water (edges of lakes, rivers and a vacation trip to the beach). How has the machine worked in this environment and would you recommend it?

6 dimes
6 copper pennies
3 zinc pennies

1 bottle opener that looks like a key
1 item that is the size of a jump drive, has an on/off switch and apple product symbol on it (no idea what it is)
1 old girl scout pin
Forgot to add the 8 golf balls I picked up too LOL.

Happy to say: Add me to the list :)

After watching you all do your metal detecting thang and thanks to CU Baker's recommendation, I now am the proud owner of my entry level detector, the Garret ACE 250. :D A kind gentleman sold me his in great condition for $160 which I found more than fair.

After my 2 hour maiden voyage, put me down for:
4 zinc pennies
5 copper pennies
2 dimes
total FV 0.29

also found keys, copper pipe elbow, platinum spark plug, 7 toy cars, and plenty of bottle caps

Sure was fun digging around. I need to work on my tools and bags to carry around. Thanks everyone for the motivation.

My buddy and I went back to the farm field yesterday for a couple of hours.
I found a few more buttons, a large buckle from a saddle or something like that and a Coronet large cent! :o
The 181_ of the date is clear but the last digit is either an 8 or 9, hard to say for sure because of the corrosion.

Got out and dug some stuff. I hit my local park for some exercise! :D I scored my first junk bling of the year. I can't wait to add the picture. It's a dragon with the wings colored red. Man, if it was only .925! Kinda heavy. Anyway, I hit some clad/copper/zincs. No silver or gold or wheats or anything old. Lots of can slaw and pulltabs. Here's what I dug.....with the help of my AT Pro. I will say that 50 degrees with some sun and little wind is NOT the usual weather for the southeast side of ChicagoLand! I even had a fly land on my arm. And the glorious sun....that felt so GOOOOOOD!

BLING!!!!!!

Image
Image

1st BLING of the year......a silver 2.21 gram charm. The ATPro had me thinking it was another copper penny. Hit 26 pennies today with 19 being zincs. The other 7 copper cents gave me a strong 81-82 VDI. That silver charm was a steady 82. The zincs come in at anywhere from 72 (being really corroded) to 80 (fresh zinc from the mint). I hit my first watch of the year, too. No watchband, just the watch. I hit 44 coins for $2.51. And throw in another "no cash" token, same size as a quarter but gave a zinc penny VDI of 76. I went bling hunting which meant lots of can slaw, pull-tabs, and a few nickels(6). I did hit ring #1 for the year, too. But it was a junker that was a little corroded. I cleaned it up just so i could see the design...but it's hard to make out with all of the decay.
