I stopped by a Chase bank. I asked if they had any half dollars and any customer wrapped coins. Teller said he only had 2 halfs, and that he personally wraps the other customer warpped coins, and he pulls all silver and other old coins out of them. I said, OK, then I'll just buy the 2 halfs. 1 clad, and 1 1968. Great percentage. Makes me wonder what was in those "searched" coins I declined.

CRH for 6/10/2011 and 6/11/2011:

The following ten boxes are from one pickup, all BWR. Total pickup charge $52.50 :x

Box #71 $500.00 Halves
one 1964, 1968d, 1969d

Box #72 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #73 $500.00 Halves
one 1968d

Box #74 $500.00 Halves
Short $1.00
Skunk

Box #75 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #76 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #77 $500.00 Halves
1967, 1968d, two 1969d

Box #78 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #79 $500.00 Halves
1966, 1967, 1968d

Box #80 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Coinflation.com silver value for the above (Friday's close) is $66.63.
So $66.63 - $52.50 pickup charge - $1.00 shortage - $5.50 face value = $7.63 profit. Considering the time involved, hardly a good batch. Have'nt dumped them yet and I'm looking for a branch that won't charge me to drop off. Two of the dump bank branches I've been taking coins to will charge going forward so I'm looking for alternatives. I need to get rid of these soon so that I can fund the next pickup.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Next batch of sixteen boxes from another bank, all BWR. No pickup charge this time but they're going to start charging with next week's batch. Same challenge as above for dump.

Box #81 $500.00 Halves
1962 Franklin

Box #82 $500.00 Halves
1964

Box #83 $500.00 Halves
1964

Box #84 $500.00 Halves
1962 Franklin, 1964, 1967, two 1969d

Box #85 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #86 $500.00 Halves
1967
Proofs: 1971s, 1982s, 1989s, 1994s
Foreign: one 2000 Equador 50 Centavos

Box #87 $500.00 Halves
Proof: 2000s, 1976 bicentennial (looks like it could be silver, will check with LCS)
Edit: The 1976 is "a 40% silver impaired proof" according to the local coin dealer.

Box #88 $500.00 Halves
Skunk for silver
Proof: 1978s

Box #89 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #90 $500.00 Halves
Missing roll! So $10.00 shortage :x
Skunk

Box #91 $500.00 Halves
1965, 1967

Box #92 $500.00 Halves
1960 Franklin

Box #93 $500.00 Halves
1968d

Box #94 $500.00 Halves
1966, 1905 (my first Barber half! pretty worn and only weighs 11.6g)

Box #95 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Box #96 $500.00 Halves
Skunk

Total (coinflation.com) silver value for this batch: $134.43.
So $134.43 - $10.00 shortage - $7.50 face value = $116.93 profit.

Total profit $116.93 + $7.63 = $124.56. And that's if there's no dump fees. Considering I went through $13,000.00 in halves and over 8 hours work to get this result, I find it rather disappointing.

Pickings seem to be steadily dwindling. If I can't get better results than this then I'll have to quit, if I'll also be incurring pickup and dump charges. No sense doing all this work just to give up my silver value to the bank in the form of fees.

Saturday's effort:

$500 in halfs = 0
$500 in dimes = 16 silver all '59-64. Best dime bag I have encountered. Took 1 hour and 10 min to edge sort. These were not plastic rolls.
$100 in nickels = 3 war nickels, 1 impaired proof.

more unsolicited advice to Locutus ---

Mr. L, Don't quit half sorting, just reduce to a low level. If you find a hot streak, you can increase again. Back when there was a reliable level of silver, I was hitting about 2 pick up/2 drop branches per day 6 days a week. Sorting over 10,000 halfs a week. For me, that was a big number, especially since I limited my dumps to only 1,000 halfs per branch per week, NEVER dumped back into the Aromored Serice I was picking up from, and I tried to keep no more than $500 in halfs at any one time. It was for me, with a full time job and 2 teenagers, a frantic pace. But silver really dried up in my area around Christmas, or a little before that. So it is no longer worth my effort to do so many banks in a week. I just do a couple a week now, and it is much more relaxing, doesn't threaten my job performance, and in general, its a much better pace for me. When you decide the large time sink isn't worth it, don't quit; just cut back. Also, I think banks won't likely charge you for 1 bag a week. If silver becomes more pentiful, you will know from your smaller sample size monitor.

(and find a way back into that credit union stash ---- try it one bag at a time, using fronts if necessary)
