Handsorting's going a little slow for me - must be because the blogging gets in the way :)

Anyways, here's the stats for my first 100 rolls. They came from Trillim Coin Services of Toronto, and are a fairly good represenation of what's floating around the city. I should say that a bank roll would be better for "finds" - i.e., curiosities that don't have much numismatic value but would be likely be kept by a novice or sentimental penny collector.

So here's the stats, for my first 5,000 Toronto pennies:

* 1942 - 1977: 481, or 9.62%.
* 1978 - 1979: 190, or 3.80%.
* 1980 - 1981: 251, or 5.02%.
* 1982 - 1996: 1377, or 27.54%
* U.S. pre-'82: 132, or 2.64%.
------------------------------------
Total coppers: 2431, or 48.62%.

I really lucked out, particularly in the '82-'96 category. These figures suprised me; for some odd reason, I thought I was getting unlucky. :?

Two other tracking categories of interest:

* "Keepers," or semi-numismatic coppers that a naive or sentimental collector would keep: 32, or 0.64%. (These are all coppers.) Not bad for regular circulation rolls.

* U.S. pennies, '82 and after: 312, or 6.24%. Total U.S.: 444, or 8.88%.

I'd better stop now, because the jerky form is telling me I've run on too long. :mrgreen:
I did it. I've been crazy enough to sort through 10,000 rolls of pennies. Almost makes you think, "some people will do anything to build up a coin collection."

No category for this one, but it's a real find even for a Canuck roll-searcher. I scored a 1933 George V penny - in low VF, no less. Roll #133 of 10,000.

http://crazypennyguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/special-pennygeorge-v.html

It's not as momentous as finding an Indian head, but it's moreso than finding a Wheatie. I've found more than seven Wheaties already, and I'm in Toronto. The George V small penny was the first after Canada ditched the large cent. (1920-36.)
I did it. I've been crazy enough to sort through 10,000 rolls of pennies. Almost makes you think, "some people will do anything to build up a coin collection."

Got myself a real Canadian error coin: a 1968 curved clip variety. Here's the baby:

http://crazypennyguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/i-found-error-coin.html

It's only worth a few bucks, but it's a real brag. Lucky me!

I found my first two steel pennies from circulation...rarer than IH's for me. Probably because I am getting bags of pennies along with the boxes.

I'm now up to 200 rolls, or four boxes. The highlight of this 100 is a real 1968 error coin, which I was lucky enough to find in my 151st roll.

Anyhoo, here's the stats for rolls 101-200:

* 1942 - 1977: 540, or 10.80%.
* 1978 - 1979: 218, or 4.36%.
* 1980 - 1981: 235, or 4.70%.
* 1982 - 1996: 1084, or 21.68%
* U.S. pre-'82: 157, or 3.14%.
* "Keepers," or semi-numismatic coppers that a naive or sentimental collector would keep: 50, or 1.00%
------------------------------------
Total coppers: 2284, or 45.68%.

This percentage was less than the one for the first 100, but 45% ain't bad.

Another tracking category of interest:
* U.S. pennies, '82 and after: 335, or 6.70%. Total U.S.: 492, or 9.84%.
I did it. I've been crazy enough to sort through 10,000 rolls of pennies. Almost makes you think, "some people will do anything to build up a coin collection."

My sister and bro-in-law have been accumulating change for 2+ years. They took all the "silver" coins out recently and spent them... so when we visited them in Florida, I saw a jar of just pennies, and offered to buy them. Here's the deets:

$20.67 sorted

COPPER STUFF
335 basic copper 1961-1981
Plus 6 wheats including 1920
Plus 7 early mems 1959-1960
Plus 1 s-mint mem 1974
Plus 45 copper 82s
Plus 1 Canadian copper
So that comes to a total of 395 coppers for a measly 19.1%

ZINC STUFF
Only 20 cents from 2009-2010-2011...
Also kept a zinc with a very large 6 stamped on the obverse...
