WELCOME!!!

In what state do you find your SILVER?

I'm assuming that you sorted 5-$500 boxes of halves. How many SILVERs were in each box? Thanks... :)

Well, that's going to finish out the month for me. Going to be doing some family type stuff over the holiday. Not a bad month, but not as good as April.

30 boxes sorted. 101 40% found and ony 9 90%. My ratio of 40% to 90% dropped to half of what April was. Averaged 0.6064 oz of silver per box and found an average of 3.66 silvers per box. 5 skunks out of the 30 boxes.

Coin roll search for 5/27/2011 and 5/28/2011 (only looking for silver, not NIFC or other interest)

18 loose rolls of halves, CWR, one 1966.

The following seven boxes were CWR from my credit union. All were short to varying degrees with up to 19 rolls per box short by one or two coins. I suspect that these were gone through by another collector, but silver found was not replaced by clad to bring each roll up to 20 coins. It was obviously deliberate. A pox upon that person for his dishonesty! Instead of taking these to my usual dump bank I'll take them back on Tuesday to see if I can work something out with the credit union. They keep a paper trail on everything but since I discovered the shortages at home, I'm probably S.O.L. That is, I probably can't prove it to the CU's satisfaction, even though I kept a log.

With my digital scale I can tell a shortage instantly by weight. A full roll is about 226 grams, whereas a single missing coin brings the weight down to about 214 grams. So in the future I plan to weigh every CWR that I buy--at the teller counter.

Karma did catch up to the dishonest collector though, through his own ineptitude. One of the rolls had nineteen 1964 Kens and one 1967 Ken, my first solid silver roll! So while all these boxes were shorted pre-searched skunks (except this one roll), I did come out ahead. Probably his best roll too, inadvertenly returned to the box.

$500 halves, Box #42: Skunk & $5.00 short
$500 halves, Box #43: Skunk & $3.50 short
$500 halves, Box #44: Skunk & $8.00 short
$500 halves, Box #45: Skunk & $9.00 short
$500 halves, Box #46: Skunk & $9.00 short
$500 halves, Box #47: Full roll silver--nineteen 1964 Kennedys & one 1967, box was $12.50 short
$500 halves, Box #48: Skunk & $6.00 short

The rest that follow were all boxes I ordered from my pickup bank, all BWR.

Canadian Nickels: 1985, 2-1986, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1999

Summary:

Walkers--4
Franklins--5
1964 Kennedys--29
40% Silver Kennedys--36
Silver dime--1
War nickels--2
Foreign--7

Shortages: $53.50

Face value of silver coins found: $37.20
Value of silver content: $730.86
(Based on Friday's closing spot of $37.96 as reported by Coinflation.com)

I probably won't be doing very many dimes or nickels in the future, just a box each every so often to gauge a trend in silver content. Dimes take longer than halves, and nickels take WAY longer than either halves or dimes, since I have to look at the date on every nickel.

I did discover a timesaver though. It turns out that bank branches that take CWR have to break open the rolls and dump the coins in a bank bag before they ship them out. My dump banks' vault tellers and I worked out an agreement that I would save them this step, (and my time in rewrapping) by simply dumping my searched coin in bags myself rather than wrapping. This saves me about 15 minutes per box. So I ordered a box of 100 plastic coin bags from my dump bank ($48.00). Cheaper than wrappers, actually, at $0.48 per bag. My dump bank will even cash me out without depositing to my account first, which to me is important since my dump bank has my joint account, but the funding for the coins comes from a separate account (inheritance).

$100. CWR's Nickels

V nickel - none

1 - War Nickel. 1945 P
27 - pre 1959
11 - S- Mint.
Proofs - none
1 - 2009 P
Canadian pre 1982 none
1 - Other - The History Channel token. A eagle on one side and the Liberty bell with 1776 on the other.

Appjoe, what is the significance of pre-1959 nickels? I found a couple dozen in my nickel box but didn't keep them (no silver). Are they worth any more than face value?

I save them because they are getting harder to find. Look at the stats here. In a $100 box that's 2000 nickels you find 20 - 40 of them, also it's away for me to save nickel bullion a little at a time instead of buying a $100. box and just putting it away. If you check Feebay under coins/nickels/1938-1959 you'll see they are selling at a premium and it just makes it more interesting searching. Maybe some other Realcenters can chime in here and voice there opinion on this.

I keep all pre-1960 nickels. Some of them from the 50's have a little premium. It doesn't cost much to have a box of pre-60 nickels, and in 10 years they may appreciate. 55, 51d, 51s, 50d, 50, 49s ---- they have some value now. They might appreciate more if the nickel content was changed, and the older coins removed from circulation.

Appjoe and Rainsonme,
Yes but don't they have to be in top condition (little wear and clean) to be worth more than face value? The listing I saw on the Bay show high grade coins. Those are the ones getting bids anyway.

Replying to Locutus question about older nickels, yes, today the older Jefferson's have to be in top condition to have any value above 5 cents. Buy a used copy of the Red Book, it contains grading guides as well as prices. The silver coin prices are irrelevant because of the price of silver, but the other coin prices haven't moved that much. Still, it doesn't cost much to have a box of old nickels, hoping for greater appreciation if the current nickels are replaced by another composition coin. Not going to make much money on them, but its something to do while searching for silver nickels.

Thanks, Rainsonme.
I think that since I'm focusing on acquiring the most silver possible, and considering the time it takes to go through a box of nickels, I'll only be doing nickels occasionally, if at all. Maybe I'll keep the pre-'60s and maybe I won't. I can search five or six boxes of halves in the time it takes to search one box of nickels. And the potential payoff per box of halves is much better.
