Working through a box of nickels, I found a 1950-D. The third I've been able to find over years of hunting. It was in great shape.

Does that include any war nickels? Even if it doesn't, that's quite a find.

sorted them yesterday. the surprise was the number of ''s'' mints. and of course the 42d non silver is one that is ocverlooked as to the low mintage

I was cleaning up....And I have one more stats for you folks.....

As you check this thread, you will see I sorted 265 boxes of canadian nickels searching for the ever elusive .999 nickels.

Well...out of the 530,000 nickels, I kept all the uglies, bent etc... coins aside, regardless of composition. Well this is what I found:

196 were .999
303 were ni-cu
849 were steel

1,248 total for a bit under 0,24%

Wait a minute- only 196 nickels out of over half a million were .999??? Only 1% would be 5,300 coins. So this is a tiny fraction of 1%. That doesn't sound right for some reason. What years did you get these boxes?

I've found a few .999 Canadians in Coinstar machines in the U.S. over the past few years. I had no idea they were so hard to get.

If those numbers are legit, it seems like the Alloy Recovery Program has been a HUGE success for the mint.

No..no..no...only 196 were in bad shape. I found over 40,000 of them but only 196 were uglies. Steel ones were in worse shape generally which speaks to the quality of the .999 ones.

Ok- now that makes sense. I too have found very few ugly .999's over the years. I think it is safe to say that I've seen many more ugly pennies than nickels over the years. Nickel is a very hard metal and that likely helps keep the appearance up.

Started going through my nickel hoard, had at least 84 boxes stacked in the garage since 2013. Have done 26 boxes so far, 13 boxes were solid date 2013-P, the main reason I stopped getting bank boxes 5 years ago. The other 13 boxes yielded:

1938-42 = 90
War = 5
1946-49 = 63
1950-55 = 66
1956-59 = 133
2009-P = 5
2009-D = 2
Canada = 12, only 1 was .999
Buffalo = 5, all undated, 1 was D mint
Misc = 4 Bermuda 5c

Yeah, it's weird, almost had as many Bermuda nickels as 2009's. 2009 dimes and nickels have always been a tough find here in south central PA. I thought there would be more, since these boxes were stacked only a few years after '09.

Since the bank re-opened and people are returning their coins, I thought I give it a test box....

It is nice to see you back looking for the elusive .999's after about a 2 1/2 year absence! 7% of them being .999's isn't too shabby.

I fondly remember a trip to the Vancouver area 3-4 years ago when I had about $800 in Canadian quarters to turn in. I remember sitting at a card table in the lobby next to the line of people waiting for tellers and rolling all the coins up. It took a while to roll that many quarters, but was still worth it. Even though I didn't have an account, they were glad to help me. I would say the majority to the vast majority of quarters had nickel in them, so maybe that is why they were so nice to me (even without an account). With the Canadian currency I got back I remember paying cash for a charming B&B in North Vancouver.

Wow I knew I had not reported nickels in s long time. But 3 Years almost.when I lost access to a computer.

Opened approximately 400 rolls of nickels this month. It was the first time I had done this since last November. Anyway, here are the highlights:
7 War nickels - one of them in AU
4 Buffalos, all no date
4 1938 Jefferson Inc one D mint
Approximately 50 1939-1942 nickels
A 1922 King George!!!!!!
A 1900 Liberty nickel - only the 4th liberty pulled in ten years.

$160 in nickels sorted...first 100...nothing, then JACKPOT!
45 War Nickels!
Several roles of almost all pre 1960 nickels with one roll being almost half war nickels

Geez. I’d be excited if I got 2-3 war nickels from a trip to the bank. Nice going!

You know I’ve gone through a lot of Canadian nickels and while I find rolls and rolls of US nickels I’ve never found a US war nickel in the wild. I’ve found really old Canadian George Vs and even one Tombac war nickel. Really surprised no silver makes its way into circulating Canadian nickels.
