Now I am back home, but while traveling to the Cincinnati, OH area yesterday I stopped at a Kroger store in Ft. Mitchell, KY (not far from Cincy). Thought I'd check the Coinstar machine and it had a 1936-P Mercury dime sitting on top of it! It was almost as if another person said "Maybe a coin collector will like this..." Usually I get my CS silver from the reject trays in the CS machines. This person likely pulled the coin out of the reject tray and was thoughtful enough to set it aside for a total stranger.

Thanks to the anonymous person who did that. One of my goals is to either buy something numismatic or find silver in all 50 states. I was able to check Kentucky off the list after finding that 36-P Merc dime. By the way, if I attend a coin show in my state and a dealer from, say, Kentucky, is there and sells me a coin, I don't count that. I have to be physically in the state for it to count. I have around 30 or so states (still updating the list) that I have coin activity in. Fortunately that includes both Alaska and Hawaii, which would be 2 really tough ones to get.

This little activity always gives me something to do if my wife is off doing something that isn't of interest to me.

2019 HALF-YEAR TOTALS!

It's looking like a banner year for CS/ground hunting, and June didn't disappoint. Although the US total was the lowest since Feb and no wheaties or silver dimes were found, a silver quarter made up for it. It's the first one I've found since March 2017. China/Taiwan became the 19th new country, and Canada has set a new face value record after only six months.

Here is a little different find. A mangled penny, and half a dime. Looks like it was cut in half with a chisel.

Penny in reject, one on the feed belt.

I don’t post many of my CS finds anymore, just the unusual stuff. In the last week or so I made a trip to the local Walmart and got 87 cents. All U.S. coins and no good dates. Three quarters, a dime and two pennies.

The thing that was unusual about this was that all the coins were in the UPPER tray, not the reject tray.

I find a fair amount of coins in the upper tray, as well as behind the upper tray handle. I've also become adept at retrieving coins that are jammed in the gap leading to the counter. Makes you wonder how quarters and nickels get missed in these areas.

Also recently found my first coin on top of the machine. Never found anything but dust there before.

Look everywhere! I once found about 32 cents sitting in a magazine rack next to the CS.

And I once found an Indian Head cent on the floor about 10 feet away from the CS machine. I agree. Look everywhere.

It was my impression that July would be a sub-par month because I made fewer CS stops than normal, plus the hot temps perhaps kept people indoors more often. I also encountered more machines than normal which were out of service. However when all tolled, it was a pretty good month. Wheats and silver dimes renewed their heated rivalry, there was a good cross section of foreigns and the US tally was $1.50 over the monthly average. And rounding things out on a racy note was a quarter-sized token depicting the best sexual position to satisfy a Capricorn woman. Nothing like getting bedroom advice from a Coinstar reject!

Both cents were wheaties - 1941 and 1957 and one of the dimes was silver, 1964D.

Then by my truck in the parking lot, another .18, dime, nickel and 3 cents as if someone just dropped them on purpose by their drivers side door. I have found a bunch of change in parking lots and at gas pumps this year.......should have kept track of it.

Some nice finds here. I'm thinking that many young people (my daughter, for instance) see pocket change as a nuisance and don't mind leaving it behind or won't stoop to pick it up even when they see it. The bad news is that this is just sad. The good news...

Indeed, I keep a keen eye on parking lots. A nice half hour walk thru my 200-unit apt complex about once a week almost always rewards me with a dime here or a couple of pennies there. That's not counting the random coins found just walking from my car to my own apartment.

Foreigns were the highlight in August as I found eight countries in this eighth month, including four new ones for the year - Cuba, Iceland, Ireland & Switzerland. That brings the 2019 tally to 23 nations, well on the way to the target goal of 25. US total was again above average and will have to stay that way for the rest of the year to reach the $60 mark ($5/month) for 2019.

Local Kroger Coinstar the other night: 2 dimes and 4 pennies. One of the pennies a 1941 wheat!!!! Woo hoo! Why do I feel so excited when I find 24 cents in the coinstar but I am so disappointed when my bank statement comes and shows my money market account paid me 24 cents?

The part that is missing here is that you aren't saying how much is in your bank account, which is fine. I understand the need to have privacy.

BUT, there are places paying much higher interest. Charles Schwab is currently paying 1.94% with a $1 minimum- the minimum used to be $25k. It is their Value Advantage money market and the trading symbol is SWVXX. I'm sure there are many others paying much better rates than banks, but these are brokerage accounts (where you can own stocks and cash investments), not true bank accounts. You can set them up to be like bank accounts where you pay bills (or autopay them). But they aren't like banks that have thousands of walk-in branches.
