I volunteered with the US Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots campaign this year, and 3 days we stood in the middle of intersections around town.......I am not authorized to release the official amount we raised this year, but we did take in around $1500.00+ in coins alone including dollar coins, half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
They told me they dont hand count the change, but rather just dump it at the bank after the fundraiser is over. I asked if before doing so if they wouldnt mind if I searched through it all first looking for rare coins, silver coins, foreign coins, gold coins, etc.
I told them I would pay well higher than any coin shop in town for anything rare or valuable, so they allowed me to do so.
Unfortunately, the results were not as good as I expected, but at least they allowed me to do it, so that way I knew, and wouldnt lay around wondering what may have been, and never known. I didnt search the cents as closely as I could have, I only had about 8 hours to search everything, and it would have taken days, I am sure I missed some wheats, but I looked closely enough to know I didnt miss any indian heads or whatever.
