Hey Everything:

It is staggering that of 181 pennies from 1982 that only 20 were zinc. So almost 90% are copper. I thought that perhaps 60-65% is more likely the long-term number that most people come up with. Just curious about your methodology. Are you weighing these on a scale and figuring that those which are 3.0-3.1 grams are copper (vs. 2.5-2.6 grams are zinc)? Or are you doing something else?

Yeah, they all get separated out into their own pile and I weight them with a scale after the whole box sort is done. I keep all these sorts in a notebook. Here are some more examples. (1982 Z/C) 9/63, 17/71, 14/67, 11/70, 16/52, 13/63, 14/68, 11/72, 12/65, 13/47, 9/50, 9/51, 11/61, 9/59, 9/50, 9/56, 16/62, 11/56, 17/73, 6/61, 6/65, 10/52, 15/64, 11/61, 11/52, 10/57, 9/74, 19/48, 11/56, 10/79, 9/64, 5/81, 8/53, 7/54, 9/51, 7/59.

They made the transition pretty late in the year, end of October it sounds like.

Everything: The only thing I can think of is that they likely didn't introduce the '82 zincs into your area til very late in the year. Amazing.

$12 in penny rolls recd. on 10/28/14 and finally gone through just now...

Pre 1982's 131 (not including wheats or 1982 coppers)
Wheats 7
1982 coppers 9
TOTAL 147 (12.25%) (OUCH!)

NOTE: No Canadian or foreign coins this time.

This was the lowest percentage I've ever gotten. Usually I'm in the 16-17% range.

$25 box, fresh bank box. Some excitement, a penny previously sorted by me came back, the mark is my secret (for now), nor is it a physical alteration to the coin itself.
