Exact Change for Scrap

Postby Dr. Cadmium » Thu Dec 31, 2015 6:51 pm

Does anyone here still get exact change for their scrap?

One yard I sell base metals to rounds up to the nearest $0.05 or $0.10 and another rounds to the nearest dollar because they stopped using coins years ago - though lately it's been a minor issue with street walk-ins coming in with less than $1.00 worth of scrap at a time.

I don't remember the last time I was paid exact change for scrap. In my own business, I round up cash purchases to the next dollar, and the lowest priced items I sell at flea markets are $0.50 each.

I get the exact amount to the penny.
Former stock broker w/ ~20 yrs. at one company. Spoke with 100k+ people and traded a lot (long, short, options, margin, extended hours, etc.).

NOTE: ANY stocks I discuss, no matter how compelling, carry risk- often
substantial. If not prepared to buy it multiple times in modest amounts without going overboard (assuming nothing really wrong with the company), you need to learn more about the market and managing risk. Also, please research covered calls (options) and selling short as well.

I get exact change to the cent. Funny thing is, when i am waiting at the register (behind thick glass window) I often find pennies on the floor! Even found a nickel once.

I made sure to recycle that spare change!

Wild. I guess inflation is worse here in the northeastern U.S. The other two yards I occasionally sell to also round to the nearest dollar or $0.05.

Advantage Metals in Columbia, MO pays out to the nearest $0.25. You get a receipt with a barcode and scan that on an ATM like cash dispenser. Employees watching the scales and giving the payout receipt are behind heavy Plexiglas but those weighing the scrap material are in an unheated shop.

A few years ago I said I got the exact amount to the penny. I go to a different place and they always round up to the next higher dollar.

My yard pays to the cent. It also pays out a half dollar when owed fifty cents or more.
