Didn't want to toss it in the landfill so went back to the scrapyard, 63 lbs. aluminum with maybe 1/4 lb. plastic attached to it, 4 lbs. of cast, and 3 lbs. of stainless screws/nuts/bolts for a grand total of 6.55.

Looks like you took in around 300 pounds of stuff! I would say just keep separating stuff into piles/ bins/ boxes/ totes and then when you have enough of something good take in the cheep stuff. Or wait till you have a truck load of steel and bring the stuff then (as most everything is worth more than sheet iron... As said in the past don't waste too much time breaking down cheep stuff to increase the value as you may make more as dirty. Time is money and it is nice to make a few dollars keeping things out of the dump as well!

Hey guys- the official price of copper (not what you receive at a scrap yard) went above $2.80/lb. today for the first time since roughly April, 2015. Any idea when we will see higher prices being paid at the scrap yards? In other words, how long do the prices need to be up before the scrap yards raise their buy prices. I'm guessing 2-3 weeks, but am curious what others have noticed.

Yesterday I got the following...

2 lbs. of clean aluminum @ 30 cents = .60
6 lbs. of aluminum cans @ 60 cents = $3.60
Total = $4.20

The sign in front of the scrapyard said they were paying $2 a pound for copper and only $70 a ton for steel. Is that in line with what you guys are seeing? The copper price sounds good to me, but I thought steel would be more like double the price.

220 lbs mixed wire @ $0.60/lb
50 lbs transformers @ $0.35/lb
26 lbs AC adapters @ $0.30/lb
92 lbs low grade boards @ $0.21/lb
120 lbs power supply boards @ $0.28/lb
70 lbs power supplies @ $0.27/lb

Aside from wire I don't normally deal with low value e-scrap, as after factoring transportation costs and labor there's very little profit to be made. This was the result of a combination of cleaning out an electronics repair shop and having space on the back end of a truck load of other material.

Space at the end of the truck made you a few more bucks! I appreciate the prices, thanks!

Do you get paid for glass?

I volunteer at the community recycling center here and we end up paying a larger center in a neighboring city to take our glass. $20 a load, I think it's a 15 or 20 yard roll-off. The alternative is hauling it to a landfill that also does recycling, but that is a 50+ mile round trip. None of the brokers around here buy glass.

Yep I only get $.03 - $.04 a pound for whole glass bottles and jars but I only go once a year and the place is right next door to the scrap yard I go to.

None of the yards or brokers near me buy glass either. Single stream recycling goes for a paltry amount, I believe it was $20/ton picked up the last time I checked, but most of the value there is in the metal, paper, and certain plastics.

Honestly, it gets crazy enough here saving returnables. The redemption centers want glass bottles boxed or they won't accept them. Even if there was a place that bought glass, I would do as hobofinds and just cash in a few times a year.

Most of our revenue is from cardboard. Shredded office paper has turned out to be pretty good too. Those plus mixed paper (we take pressboard/flatboard and office paper and books that we cut the spines off) mostly wind up going to a drywall paper plant that's only ~15 miles away.

Between this load and the last glass load you should have a little more space in your yard! Were you able to do the steel all in one trip?

In a city of around 250 thousand, a big landfill near end of life, they were using glass to try and weigh it down, make it last longer. kind of makes sense.
