Dr. Cadmium- you might consider splitting up your wiring to get a better price, but it does take a bit more time to do so. I usually do this type of work while listening to a baseball, basketball or football game.

For me, I separate the wiring into three basic types:

1) Thicker wire such as cords you plug into a wall (with the plug itself clipped off);
2) Thin wire which is very stiff (I clip the ends off); and
3) Thin wire which is very easy to bend (again I clip the ends off).

I also have a fourth box for unusual items that I don't know how to classify. I show these to the attendant at the scrap yard and let him decide. See my next post for prices realized.

This was the most I've received in a single visit since May, 2014. Copper breaking above $3/lb. (per Kitco) the past few days may have helped.

Not worth the time. That price I'm getting is for all wire mixed together including:

1) electrical cords, power cords, wire with the plugs still on
2) all types of computer wire with the plugs still on
3) automotive wiring harness

The only restrictions are there can't be any adapters, BX, coaxial cable, aluminum wire, or fiber optic.

The only types fo wire I bother to separate for a higher price are Cat 5, romex, THHN, and cable.

On your thhn wire is this all #1 is there a med grade thhn? And when you list cable I am sure that's not coax, what type of wire is that?

Wire is a small part of my business, so I'm not as knowledgeable about all of the sorting intricacies. Copper prices in my region are generally $0.10 - $0.15 lower than what I'm seeing others report. This has been the trend for over a decade now.

For mixed wire I get $0.63/lb. This is for all electrical wire with plugs, single and double insulated. Includes all types of computer wire and automotive wiring harness. The company I'm selling it to is selling it by multiple trailor loads (30,000 - 40,000 lbs each) at a time and I believe they are getting around $0.75/lb for it.

Alternatively, the scrapyard near me is paying $0.25/lb - $0.75 for most wire depending on type and if the ends are cut off. Selling my wire this way would take more time to sort and prepare it and I'd get less money.

"THHN" is single insulated solid wire, the type inside romex house wiring or BX cable. I belive is has to be gauge 16 or larger to qualify as THHN.

"Cable" is a slang term some yards use for very high yield single insulated wire. One yard near me does small, medium, large. Another does a certain price for anything AWG4+.

"Telco" is slang for telecom wire, mainly Cat5 and Cat6. This I can get at least $0.75/lb for locally if I cut the ends off. If I shop around, I can probably get $0.90/lb but I rarely get large quantities. Usually when I do, it's still on the rolls and worth more to sell for use.

"Romex" is double-insulated house wire. Underground (gray) and older cloth house wire is worth much less, my local yard only pays $0.75/lb for these types as regular wire vs. $1.20/lb for white or yellow romex.

"BX" cable has a spiraled metal outer layer that's either aluminum or steel and 3 insulated wires inside. The aluminum variety is worth more than steel, $0.60/lb vs. $0.17/lb at my local yard.

Aluminum wire is usually in the form of small cables, and price depends on wether or not it's single or double insulated. Stripped it has its own aluminum grade, higher value than extruded.

Coaxial cable goes with light iron/shred by me. There are some types that are worth more depending on the thickness and shielding, over $0.30/lb for better grades, but these are uncommon.

Light #2 ins wire 42lb at 0.70/lb (this was my best deal of the trip)
Alumn-old sheet 12lb at .35/lb (i made mistake of mixing all my aluminum together, including two high grade turbos. My biggest looser)
#2 Copper 6 lbs at 1.90/lb (another looser because I had one lb or so of #2 with the rest #1)
Sheet iron 106lb at 130/GT (.058/lb thats good, right? Better than Texas)

I was selling these for my neighbor, so I didnt sell for $9. Isnt that low on any Diesel catalytic converter? Ought a be at least $25?? It wasnt off a 4 banger or anything!!

I took some cats in to a core buyer, one was a big diesel, NO value , looked it up on his computer, no PGMs at all. It came home with me.

I been doing a lot of scrapping to much to list but I will give you some pricing in central Massachusetts
tin/Light Iron $170 G/T been a up trend all summer higher then I see most so Im happy.
$170 same for #1 steel unprepeared over 5 feet length, only 5$ more for prepared all goes in tin/light iron pile.
copper #2 $2.04 /lb was briefly at $2.29
Al Old Sheet $0.26 down from .29 I did get .45 for some nice extruded 10/10 a few weeks ago but the trend is down with spot up to low IMO
Yellow Brass $1.57 up from 1.42
Batteries $0.13 Up from .09 still to low IMO
#2 copper Insulted %40 $.50 /lb for mixed with ends. including computer wire ribbon all wire that to thin to strip.
Extension and power cords a bit more $.60 I try to strip this stuff if I have time . I don't typical get a lot of it
Al/Cu Radiators .99 up from .91 I always saw the copper ends off and make sure there is no FE on em ( don't get a lot)

sounds like you are getting diesel cats made after 2010, SCR/DPR systems Spray DEF (urea) and diesel fuel into the Cat and burn it off periodically. theres little to no PM's in them. but I'm not expert.

To answer your question- the one type of #2 (40%) was what I normally see. The other type (#2- 50%) appeared to be for a computer or telephone network. One of the long cords (50-100 ft. long) was white on the outside- the shorter one (15-20 ft. long) was blue on the outside. They both came out of a construction dumpster where tenant improvement work was being done.

Thanks for the info I think that wire could have been Cat5. I am trying to separate out my wire more and more to try and get a better price. And low grade motors suck, one place around here started that hopefully others don't follow. The main place I use for electric motors can be any type and size all the way down to computer fans if you have a good mix of stuff all for the same price.
