I didn't really get that price. They just rounded up to the nearest dollar and didn't even itemize it on the receipt, so I just guessed to make the math work (since I got $73 total).

In California:

33.6 lbs PET plastic bottles @ $1.24/lb
5.5 lbs plastic water jugs @ $0.57/lb
39 lbs aluminum cans @ $1.60/lb

Yup. They pay 98 cents in AZ, then truck it over to CA to get $1.50+. I grew up in Phoenix, and you could always tell which yards were doing this. They always paid the most.

Anyways, I was actually talking to somebody who works on a compliance team for the California CRV. He was bragging about how successful the program is with aluminum cans having 99% redemption rate while plastic bottles have a 70% redemption rate. I had to stop myself from telling him it is due to AZ & NV yards bringing it over to CA. The guy seemed pretty arrogant, so I was just letting him ramble on. He also commented how so many beverage companies are decreasing the amount of plastic used in bottles and they make money when people bring in bottles by weight.

at $.05 deposit for cans and bottles under 24 oz. and $.10 for containers 24 oz. and up wouldn't it pay better if you turned in the cans and bottles by piece vs. pound?

In most cases it pays more to go by piece. However. The law only requires places to do a count on 50 pieces or less of any type of material. So some places refuse to count more and will only weigh. 50 5 cent containers only gets me $2.50, I'm not going to wait in a long line for that.

There are some heavy bottles, like gatorade for example that you get more than your deposit when getting paid by weight.

Ideally, I bring in bags of heavier stuff to weigh and hand over a bag of 50 light water bottles and ask for a count on those.

I have cut off one side of the blade with a sawsall then the motor was able to be removed from base. Turned in the motor as dirty cast a little more than dirty aluminium

And they charge you tax on your deposit! WTF. And in some places in California a extra charge to have a bag to put your items that you just purchased into! Do they charge you a CRV when you are at a bar or restaurant? If so how do you get your paid deposit back?

Yup, you pay tax on CRV because it is a "fee" and fees are taxable. And you pay an extra charge for bags at the store, so you have to bring your own. I've never seen a bar or restaurant charge a separate fee for the CRV. I'm sure it's included in the price though because the restaurant has to pay it to the distributor. Same with vending machines. The soda distributor has to pay the CRV, so it would be included in the vend price.

I'm seeing cars that look like they are less than ten years old going to the scrapyard these days, we are talking clean, clean, no dents, no rust, nice treads, German cars, wow, must be why so many girls I know lease, maintenance costs must be totaling them out. Tomorrow I bring in a feather light aluminum bike frame, aluminum radiator, and some kind of 40 lb. chunk of steel that came out of a boiler or something that my bike shop repair guy gave to me today and I said I'd never do aluminum again. The radiator I didn't know what to do with, it had lots of fabricated plastic on the ends of it, so I took a sledgehammer to it, if they try to give me 6 cents a pound for it because of the little bit of plastic still stuck to it, I'll take it back home and throw it in the dumpster so they can mine it out of the landfill next century when the green revolution comes, then it will be worth something.

Today's scrap run.

Save up the dirty stuff it all adds up. I used to pass up steel as steel sucks money wise, but when you break down something to make it clean you get steel... so I added it to the pile and went from there!
