Scrapping trip for today...

Bare bright copper 4 @ 2.45/lb. = $9.80
Steel 118 @ 0.06/lb. = $7.08
Aluminum MLC, clean (mixed low copper) 4 @ 0.35/lb. = $1.40
#2 Copper Ins. 35% (black wire) 42 @ 0.40/lb. = $16.80
#2 Copper Ins. 42% (colored wire) 7 @ 0.45/lb. = $3.15
Dirty stainless steel 11 @ 0.10/lb. = $1.10
Clean Electric Motors & Fans 39 @ 0.15 lb. = $5.85
Rounding down -$0.18
TOTAL FOR ABOVE $45.00

Above was my first ever stripped bare bright copper taken in for scrapping. They said some of it wasn't as bright as the rest, but I still got $2.45/lb. for all of it! This was my first time using the stripping tool (Model WSA wire stripper) from TNT Tooling, which costs about $50.00. I stripped Romex to get the bare bright price. I'd say the tool was well worth purchasing.

That sucks, I thought it would be 50 of each type of item at least, but even then, it would still not be that much money even if they were all $.10 deposit items. And 50, 40 oz. glass bottles would take up a lot of space!

And they charge you tax on your deposit! WTF. And in some places in California a extra charge to have a bag to put your items that you just purchased into! Do they charge you a CRV when you are at a bar or restaurant? If so how do you get your paid deposit back?

Yup, you pay tax on CRV because it is a "fee" and fees are taxable. And you pay an extra charge for bags at the store, so you have to bring your own. I've never seen a bar or restaurant charge a separate fee for the CRV. I'm sure it's included in the price though because the restaurant has to pay it to the distributor. Same with vending machines. The soda distributor has to pay the CRV, so it would be included in the vend price.

I see lots of redemption centers are closing in California as they don't want the homeless and or other issues with redeeming the deposits. This seems crazy do most people just leave the nickel or dime deposit behind and don't try and get it back?

A lot of people do leave the nickel or dime deposit behind. What all these centers closing down means is a 30 minute to an hour wait to turn in your bottles and cans. It's almost impossible to turn anything in on a Saturday anymore unless you want to give up your entire morning.

I agree lately I just sort out my steel as I get it, hardly break down any to make it prepared or even clean sheet. Only problem with that method is more piles of metal around the yard
