Sorry I spent the time on the aluminum (again). Better just stick to copper/brass/zinc. Brought in about 10 lb. of power supplies and motherboards and got 68 cents, now I know where that's going in the future (to the landfill). I did take two small motors down to nothing for the first time and was able to get the copper off them.
100lb sheet iron@ 100/nt for 5.00
13lb 5/6 aluminum @.12 for 1.56

That's a good idea. You would need 800+ pounds of sheet iron to get that price

I haven't seen many yards in the region distinguish between these two grades. Sometimes the terms "dirty aluminum" and "irony aluminum" are used and priced differently. Are these items you're selling approximately 70% and 50% aluminum?

Re: What did you scrap?

Postby CrazyTom » Sun Jun 30, 2019 6:14 pm

I had never taken apart a front loading high efficiency clothes washer before. A house down the road had one sitting in the drive with a FREE cardboard sign stuck in the door.
So, what the hell, I grabbed the pickup and humped it home.

First thing that I learned is that a significant amount of the weight is due to stone-like counter weights bolted to the drum. The second thing was how small the motor was and the light gauge of all the wiring. The sheet metal sides were about the only standard thing one would expect. Good thing it wasn't very far from the house.

I was also hoping there might be some coins trapped in places, but that was also a bust.

I haven't taken it in yet for scrap. And I wouldn't take it all by itself assembled. A smart scrap yard would probably refuse it outright when in one piece or ding you with a significant down check thanks to the stone weights.
Pedal to the metal.
