OK, I usually post in the silver and gold forums, sometimes in the economic forums. But I have lurked in this scrap forum for a number of months. You guys are cool and I took it upon myself to gather all the aluminum cans and cat food cans I could and I found an old ironing board in my basement and went to the scrap yard FOR THE FIRST TIME! Drum roll...$3.60 total. Small though it may be, I felt like I hit the lottery. It was stuff I would have got rid of without a second thought. Thanks guys and heres to bigger loads in the future.

Drive down back roads or alleys people put out stuff all the time. Check craigslist for free stuff. Buy cheap at yard sales, etc.

As you break things down thats how you will aquire all the different metals.

I like junking, this summer I collected hundreds of lbs of aluminum through windows, storm doors, old siding, etc. I live in a larger city and every other week is pile your curb high with stuff, I get up early in the morning before the garbage guys pick it up. The last time I brought it in I got more for the catalytic converter I found on the side of the road, $64. A friend of mine is a scrapper, he gets leads on craigslist and through word of mouth. He needs a big truck, a trailer, strong back, etc. since he goes after the bigger stuff. It's definitely work. For now I gave up on aluminum but have a wire copper collection going, and am learning more about recycling computer parts.

Excellent - thank you for the tips. My wife had to have her catalytic converter replaced and I made sure to get the old one back from the Toyota shop. I am learning as I go. I sure appreciate everyone's insight! :D

not too bad for a day's work. besides your time, what is your estimated expenses acquired in obtaining these metals?

Largest cost would be gas, driving around to find the stuff, bring it home break it down, then transport it to the scrap yard when you have enough. Prices are falling fast so I added a few things on the load of steel that I had on my truck. I should have held on to most of the non farris stuff untill the price went up!

Thanks for the insight. Funny you mentioned that because today an IT person came by at work, took an old printer and threw the wires in my trash can. I of course took the cords sense they were deemed "trash."

With wire cords, I just don't see the feasibility in stripping them unless you have a wire stripper, and then you have to have a hell of a lot of wire to strip. Any suggestions regarding wire? I am hoarding the wire, but then what?

All scrap yards buy insulated wire. They pay depending on the copper percentage. Christmas is coming up. It's a great time to pick up scrap wire, strings of lights vacum cleaners etc.

My yards here in AZ will NOT buy stripped copper wire. But I'll still strip the easy stuff when time permits and hoard it. You can sell it on e-bay. 110v and 220v household wire is easily srtipped by using a razor to slit about an inch on one end. Peel back the insulation and put it in a vice , with a pair of pliers grab the copper and pull. Pull it slow and steady. You can take your razor and gently score the insulation as you go, like skinning a rabbit or squirrel.

You can even do it while drinking and you probably won't hurt yourself.

I really appreciate your feedback! The tip you provided about the wire is invaluable, I will be on the look out with Christmas around the corner. I have to admit however, I am new to scrapping, and I couldn't tell you what a 110v or 220v wire is. Also, I saw a different post here on RC where someone stated the scrap yards would only take stripped wire, so I experimented with this, and found it to be a poor way to make money. I will have to see if my local yard takes unstripped wires. Man, I really appreciate the time it took to provide this valuable insight.
