Paper cardboard recycling

Postby hobo finds » Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:02 am

I have a place by me has started buying paper, prices are about .01 a pound for it depending on type of paper. It's not worth saving yet, due to low prices. I saved all our paper from household use for the month of Jan to see how much we have.

Newspaper 16 lbs
Paperboard 12 lbs
Office paper 4 lbs
Cardboard 5 lbs
TTL lbs 37

So looks like 444 lbs for the year would be average. At .01 only $4.44 but at .05 it would be $22.20

Always cool to keep an eye on new markets. Places near me buy that stuff at similar prices. And at the same prices, it s not worth messing around with... YET.

As prices go up on materials I see paper, plastic and glass gaining value in the future. Glass is heavy and common which would yield the most profit- but its also completely useless, I think new glass is cheaper than recycling old glass.

Finally, maybe a paper market is emerging. I have always recycled my paper, cardboard...but with no pay and I have to take it to the drop off. This past weekend while dropping off a load of paper products a couple rolled up and unloaded three lead acid batteries....in the back of my truck they went and $26.80 in my pocket...134 lbs @ .20 lb

Finally got paid for recycling paper.

I wish something like that would open near me. The amount of paper that I could have recycled would add up (I work as a tech on copying/printing equipment). By far, most of it ends up in the landfill.

I just remembered that old Steve Martin joke about cardboard "I bought cardboard when it was 2 cents a ton,and its up to 3 cents now! And I bought 3 tons of it so........,well you figure the math. And I made a special deal so that I only have to store half of it in my garage."

Yep composting is cool. I have a "heavy duty" shredder so I shred pizza boxes and other cardboard and paper. Then I compost all that would waste around trees, flowers, shrubs, etc. It really has done wonders for the flowerbed. Should paper pay better one day I will drop it off...until then I compost away.

I hope to start raising worms using shredded paper products.

I recycle to save on my trash bill, 2-3 trips a month to local bins for recycling probably cost me $4-$5 in gas, but any extra trash for the month I give to other family members. Saves me about $50 a month, that beats any .01/lbs. paper recycling. lol

can you explain how you save money - i live in the city and we pay for the garbage man whether or not we need it. do you take your trash to the dump a la carte? do they charge by weight or volume?

My garbage man charges by the can. I take plastic, cardboard, newspaper, and magazines to the recycling center across the river every 6-8 weeks. I burn paper trash. Most food scrap gets tossed in the woods. That typically leaves very little for the garbage man. Less than $10 a month.

That is awesome, I am glad to see others that compost even if you just "toss" the food scraps into the woods.
