I was offered an old ATM machine for scrap for free. Any ideas whether it will be worth the effort? The weight is extremely heavy.

I would do it, just to see what was inside! I just wonder what the scrap yard will say when you show up with one??? May have to have a letter stating that you are the owner and stuff..

The weight is caused by the safe inside. Depending on how old it might be an actual safe, that you can't scrap, or it could be a metal safe. I am assuming the cassests are taken out, but if they aren't those are typically made of plastic.

What I do know is the bottom of it contains a safe. Have not seen it outside of the wall it was in.

I'd take it apart and look for missplaced FRN's. Kinda like finding socks in an old dryer.

It has to be worth something as scrap, unless all the weight is from concrete. If you take it, please let us know if it was worth it.

Went to see the ATM today. It is very heavy, probably 600 lb. not sure how I would move it. Unfortunately it didn't have the keys, they were left back at the credit union. Will try to get a look at the inside tomorrow. The model is CasSoyrce by Diebold.
Here's pictures.

Heck, even if it's just 600 lbs of steel, that's $60 right?

Time to remove from warehouse, hire 5 strong guys to lift it and move it already chewed up $60. I turned the free offer down this morning. Someone posted a similar ATM on EBay for $600 and it didn't sell.

The safe is most likely not steel....the rest of the atm is plastic.

A good dolly and you could have moved it by yourself. I think you made the right move walking away though.

You could've fixed it up and install it in your home. Have the kids (or family members or annoying neighbors) pay a fee to withdraw money.

Thanks for sharing the links. My co-workers said it would be cool to have in the house, and it would certainly be unique.

I work for a bank and brought home 2 old ATM's over the last year. I completly striped them and saved the safes to store my silver and coin collection and still have room for other things I want to protect.

How would a guy go about making contacts to be offered a free ATM machine? You have awesome friends.

I am the Board Treasurer at the credit union. I volunteered years ago as a Supervisory Committee member, which does low level audit work. Most smaller credit unions are always looking for volunteers. I am an accountant, but we have volunteers with all types of backgrounds. This credit union has $60 million in assets, but when I first volunteered it had $25 million in assets.

The credit union has another ATM, which is a wall unit they are offering me. Should be available next month, when our lease runs out at this branch. It will be lighter and it is a lot newer. I think I will take this one.

There will be a lot of old ATMs available as all ATMs have to comply with new ADA requirements. They have to have braile on all the drive up ATMs, think about this one, how many blind people are driving up to an ATM. They require a place to plug in headphones. They have to be able to speak in English and Spanish. If you see an ATM that doesn't have these items, it is in violation of the law right now. All ATMs should have been compliant January 1, 2012, but the ATM companies have been unable to build the ATMs quick enough. It used to be that the ATM companies would give money for the old ATM as they would refurbish and then resell them, but they are actually charging to take the old ATM off the premisis, and giving them to charity and they salvage them for scrap value.

There are definitely perks in being a volunteer at the credit union. I get all the coin I want and things like ATMs are even offered. I also learn a lot of what the administration is doing to the financial system, and it isn't good. Their policies are driving out the smaller financial institutions in favor of the super banks.
