Contemporary door-knobs & locks

Postby AGgressive Metal » Sun Nov 11, 2012 8:16 pm

Does anyone know if the cheap door knobs and locks that look brass are actually brass at all, or just steel with a tiny brass coat? I will be picking up a lot of these as I change the locks on foreclosed homes in my new job. Obviously there is some steel in the lock assembly as well as all the screws and such. But I'm hoping the scrap yard will count them as "brass with steel" or something like that.

that will probably depend on the quality & brand of doorknob. Just use a magnet and test them.

A lot of modern door knob assemblies contain only a small amount of brass, and are difficult to separate. You'll only get dirty brass price if they are mostly brass.

The best way to find out is to fill up a couple of buckets and go to your favorite scrap yard.

Thanks, this was essentially my plan. I'll save them either way but I really hope they give dirty brass price for them.

Got 40 cents a pound, "unclean brass". Totally worth saving!
