Potted Transformers

I have about a dozen and a half Neon Transformer Power Supplys 15000v 30mA. They each weigh about 22lbs BUT they are filled with tar/resin. I have no idea if they are in working condition or not so selling them would be tough.

has anyone here ever de-tared one of these? if so how?

was it worth it?

Any idea of what the transformer inside might weigh?

Finally do yards take these as anything other then light iron because of the difficulty in removing their contents.

Don't these have a 115V/120V AC input? If so, you can test them quickly with a good voltmeter. A lot of time businesses upgrade their lighting and throw out their old equipment, so many of these may still work even if you pulled them out of a dumpster.

If there's a lot of tar, their internal structure is probably closer to a ballast than a traditional transformer or power supply.

They're worth at least ballast price, which is in between shred and electric motor price at yards that deal in ballasts.

Some places may pay electric motor price for them.
