I took apart an old clothes iron. My magnet will not stick to the bottom of it. Is it AL?

Usually this piece is aluminum. However, the heating element is often embedded within, and it can have magnetic sections.

Roger. The part that touches the clothes is non magnetic the part that would be in the iron is magnetic. I thought it odd.

Typically any consumer thing having to do with high-heat like hair straighteners, coffee pot heaters, irons, etc will have some aluminum because its a good heat conductor and much cheaper than copper.

Yep! Some things just go in with the dirty alum pile. Too much to break down for little reward. Coffee plates is a good example
